While I was putting together some info about historic haunted places for Darlene at Destinations Travel Magazine, I was reminded of haunted places I’d like to Haunt Jaunt to here in Tennessee.
I’ve been to a few already, such as:
- Grand Ole Opry
- Ryman Auditorium
- The Hermitage
- Carnton Plantation
- Stones River National Battlefield
- Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Gatlinburg (Didn’t even know it was haunted until I started doing research! It was a great place to stay, and at that time it was dog friendly so Murph got to go too.)
I also mentioned a few I’d like to go to on my post about Memorial Day Haunt Jaunting. But here’s the complete list:
- Adams, TN – Bell Witch Cave (I know it’s a joke and really has nothing to do with the legend, but since it’s here and so am I seems like I probably should go.)
- Chapel Hill – To look for the ghost lights on the railroad track.
- Cleveland – Greens Caverns (According to the story on Shadowlands and StrangeUSA.com, the time to go is on October 30. That’s when a tall shadowy figure is said to roam fields with a sickle. At midnight he returns to cavern and if you pass by him your soul with stay with him in the cavern.)
- Castalian Springs – Cragfont and Bledsoe Fort Historical Park. Also, according to Wikipedia‘s write up of Bledsoe’s Station, a few hundred feet east of the fort site within the historic park there’s something called the Cavern of the Skulls. It’s closed to the public but it’s thought the cave was used to store “trophy” skulls. (Human skulls were found there when it was first discovered in the 19th century, and research confirms it was likely used by the Cheskiki Mound people for some kind of ritual like that.)
- Dover – Fort Donelson National Battlefield
- Hurricane Mills – Loretta Lynn’s Ranch
- Kingsport – Bloomingdale The Witch’s Cave (Supposedly a “witch” is buried on top of a hill in Timbertree. People report hearing her beat on her coffin to get out.)
- Franklin – It’ll always be on the list. Been there dozens of time, but I’ll take any excuse to jaunt down there. Made it to Carnton Plantation, but not to Carter House yet.
- McMinnville – Devil’s Cave (Legend has it two men were caving and one was in cave while other was on top. Man in cave screamed and when his friend pulled him up he was shaking, icy cold any his hair had turned white. Never talked about what he saw though.)
- Nashville – Two Rivers Mansion & Golf Course (Saw this one on Appalachian Ghost Walks site. Been to this area and rode bikes around the greenway, but never been in the mansion.)
- Shiloh – Shiloh National Military Park
- Smyrna – Fate Sanders Rec Area (According to StrangeUSA.com two fisherman came across a little boy they were lost. One went with the boy into the woods to help fin the boy’s father. The other stayed behind. Later he heard the boy laughing and figured they’d found his dad, but his friend didn’t come back. He waited some more. The boy reappeared and told the other man to follow him, he and his father had something neat to show him. He high tailed it out of there. The friend disappeared.)
- Sweetwater – Lost Sea Cave
- Manchester – Old Stone Fort
Which have you been to? Which would you like to go to?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
Save Bell Witch Cave for when I visit some day. I seriously want to just feel the place and see if there’s anything to it. Geologically it should be pretty active but I want to viscerally soak it in…
Consider it saved!
Great list! We really should get together and haunt jaunt to at least one of these places. They are so close to both of us!
I would love to be able to haunt jaunt to any of those places with you.
Jessica, YES! I agree! Maybe it’ll give you a jump on things for your next book too. 😉
Julie, if you guys stop by for the Hug a Blogger I will reserve Bell Witch Cave for both you and Sharon!
Can someone plz tell me where Green’s Cavern is located at in Cleveland, TN? I have lived there my entire life and have no idea where it is nor does anyone I know have a clue as to where it is. Directions, a street name, anything would be of great help to me. Thanks!
