Paranormal Tourism Compliments So Many Travel Types

I play tennis with a girl who cringes when I tell her about my vacations. They’re too busy and strenuous for her. Her idea of getting away is planting her bum on a beach under the sun with drink service.

That’s like maybe a half day kind of activity for me. And maybe just once during the trip. When I’m on vacation, I like to go exploring. I’m always on the lookout for haunts to jaunt to.

However, I don’t limit myself to just taking ghost tours or what have you. In most aspects of my life, I’m a failure at multitasking –except when it comes to travel.

I like to find historical sites, scenic spots, romantic places, and yummy food. If I happen to come across ghost stories along the way, I consider it a bonus.

Or if I happen to stumble upon a historic, scenic, romantic, or delicious place I’ve purposely jaunted to because I’ve heard restless spirits might roam there, all I can say is, “Score!”

That’s why it’s fun to follow the travel blogs that I do. Not too many others focus specifically on paranormal, or dark, tourism. (Well, in fact I don’t really know of any.) But once in a while they’ll incorporate something along those lines, or they’ll introduce me to a place that gets me thinking, “Oh, there must be ghosts there!”

I thought it’d be fun to list some of the various travel types. Where applicable, I’ve also listed travel blogs I follow that fall under them. (Generally speaking. Their travel styles tend to cross over between interests. But I’ve tried to put them in a main category that I think basically defines their travel types.)

ADVENTURE/OUTDOOR

BUDGET

  • Budget Travelers Sandbox – They could also go under photography.
  • Hecktic Travels – Not really sure where to put them. They are very unique travelers. They sold everything to travel and one way they afford “cheap” accommodations is via housesitting gigs. Super fascinating way to travel, and they sort of have to budget in a way and be frugal about how they get around so…Budget seemed a good place to put them.
  • The Time-Crunched Traveler – I put them here because “budget” doesn’t just mean money, it means time. Ellen and Justin share travel tips to help Americans use the most of their two-weeks worth of vacation.

COUPLES/ROMANTIC TRAVEL

  • Four Jandals
  • Guy and Girl Travels
  • The Gypsynester
  • Roamancing
  • Travel for Love
  • Travelocafe

CRUISING

  • The World is a Book – But also crosses over into Travel with Kids/Family Travel, just about equally in fact, so I made an exception and listed this one in two categories.

CULTURAL

  • GlamourGranny Travels – Could also consider this one crossing over into Shopping (she often shares the neatest –and nicest– places to pick up wonderfully unique and amazing things) and Women Travelers.
  • The Lost Backpack
  • Traveling with Sweeney – Also Photography.

DISNEY

ECO TRAVEL

  • Tanama Tales

FAMILY TRAVEL/TRAVEL WITH KIDS

FOOD

GIRLS GETAWAYS

GOLF

LGBT

MEDICAL

PET

PHOTOGRAPHY

REGIONAL/GEOGRAPHIC

  • Amazing Australian Adventures
  • European Travelista
  • InsideJourneys – Heavy focus on Jamaica but also other travel destinations.
  • Italian Notes
  • Rori Travels Florida
  • Wanderlust Women Travel – Main focus is Italy, but could also peg this under Women Travelers.

RELIGIOUS

SHOPPING

SOLO TRAVELERS

VOLUNTEERING/GIVING BACK

WOMEN TRAVELERS

  • Just TravelousYvonne’s travels could also be classified as Adventure.

After putting this list together, I see I tend to gravitate towards certain travel types. What can I say? I like the way they roll and the places they virtually transport me to!

What’s your favorite type(s) of travel? Do you follow any of the above blogs? If not, which travel blogs do you follow?

  1. Great list and thank you so much for including me!

I follow most of these travel blogs. I’m most interested in the adventure, photography and geographic travel blogs.

  2. We’re all a bit multidimensional, I think. Thanks for the mention 🙂

  3. Author

Oh gosh, Sophie. I probably should’ve stressed that more. Yes, you are right. I hope I didn’t make it sound like only some were and others weren’t. Sheesh. Didn’t mean to if I did!

  4. Author

Sounds like you and I have the same interests! Although, you wouldn’t know photography for me since I hardly have any listed there, but almost all the ones I do follow are because I love the writing AND their pics! 😉

  5. Thank you very much for including me on this awesome list, Courtney! I’m a travel multi-tasker too. Sometimes my husband says that he feels like we’re on that show the Amazing Race when I plan things. 🙂 I do follow a lot of these blogs and I love that I can armchair travel everyday through everyone’s adventures.

  6. Great list! I follow quite a few but will definitely look into others I’m not familiar with. I find blogs a fun way to live vicariously because it is a big world out there with lots of great stuff to discover and my time and budget are way too limited! Thanks for sharing and for including me on this list 🙂

  7. Author

Sure, Mary! I love your blog and your energy and the love you have for your kids. And cracking up at your Amazing Race comment…that’s how I feel my hub does to me! The things he finds for us to do…yikes! (But fun. 😉

  8. Thanks for including me in this list, Courtney! Incidentally, I went a few weeks ago to Rose Hall Great House for their haunted tour but they had, of all things, a wedding reception going on. I’ve been curious about RH’s ghosts for a while now – I have seen (friendly) dead people — but none as notorious as Annie Palmer, the White Witch, though I doubt she’ll come out to play. According to local lore, she’s been “planted.”

  9. Thanks very much for introducing me to some fellow travel writers (I’m not all that fond of the word ‘bloggers’) I didn’t know about before. For the next few days I’ll be busy discovering them. And, of course, thanks plenty for inculding me under the heading ‘cultural’. That is indeed my foremost purpose with a bit of this and that thrown in.

Oooo! I love your comment, Marcia! I’m going to contact you to see if you’d want to guest blog about any of this. I’m intrigued and want to know more!

  11. Author

Inka, you are most definitely a writer. And I would consider everyone else to be that too. I’m trying to be a travel writer, but…when I read all of the posts by everyone on this list of mine? I realize I am still a work in progress. For me, right now, “blogger” works. But that’s okay. Once I get good at that I’ll graduate to play in the big leagues with the rest of you! 😉

  12. Thanks for the mention!

  13. Oh thanks so much for including me, that’s so sweet of you!

  14. Thanks so much for including me!! I’d say that I’m also leaning heavily towards photography though still very much on the learning curve. I’ve got a few new blogs to check out now too.

  15. Thanks for including me, Courtney. I follow several of these already but will check out the others too. 🙂

  16. Author

Great! I’m glad you found it. Sorry again for cyberstalking you all over to tell you.

  17. Author

Hi Leigh! I did see you cross over quite heavily into photography. I shoulda mentioned that.

  18. Author

Welcome, Ayngelina! I TOTALLY dig your blog. The name alone is priceless!

  19. Thank you so much for including me! Great list!

  20. Wow! I’m SO honoured! Although I was interested to see into which category you placed me!! I’m familiar with many of your picks – and look forward to catching up with the others!

    Thanx again!!
