Searching for Medusa in Istanbul’s Basilica Cistern

Descending into the Basilica Cistern

Taner, one of the front desk staff at our hotel, was loaded with great tips. The one I liked best was when he suggested we check out the Basilica Cistern and look for Medusa.

I’m a huge Greek and Roman mythology fan. Medusa immediately piqued my interest. We got directions to the Cistern, and were shocked to discover we had already passed it several times. We just didn’t know it was there.

All I knew about it was that there was a Medusa face in a column and big fish. I had no idea it was underground or so amazing. Hopefully some of my pictures below captured the grandeur of the “forest of columns.” (That’s how a picture on Wikipedia described them. I liked it. Sums it up perfectly poetically.)
