Many people have heard about the extreme popularity of river cruising. Ships that traverse the Rhine, Danube, Nile and Yangtze give passengers an in-depth and intimate look at all the beautiful small towns and cities adjacent to these beautiful waterways. Just as there is immense beauty along these rivers there are legends of times gone by and even a few haunted spots to keep your eyes peeled for.

Here are four spots that might send a shiver down your spine:

River: The Rhine

In the Rhine River Gorge at the narrowest part of the river is Lorelei, a very special rock. This rock is known as a murmuring rock because it amplifies the sounds of the currents and a nearby waterfall. Writers took this curiosity and created the legend that Lorelei was a siren who distracted sailors causing them to crash their ships.

River: The Yangtze

Many tourists venture to Ghost City in Fengdu. This abandoned city on a mountaintop is believed to be where two locals traveled to practice Taoism eventually becoming immortal. This is an attraction where travelers can learn about Chinese beliefs in ghosts and death. This spot also has a giant sculpture, which holds a record as the biggest sculpture carved on a rock.

River: The Nile

Egypt 04

The curse of the pharaohs may seem like complete hogwash to some, but others believe that opening the tomb of a pharaoh is not in your best interests because of the powers that live within. Nowhere in history was this “curse” so captivating than with the discovery of the tomb of King Tut. Several people who were involved in the discovery of the tomb have died from unexpected deaths.

River: The Rhine

The rivers of Europe are lined with the remnants of castles; some conjure images of princesses and princes of popular fairy tales, while others give you a true insight into life in the middle ages. At Rheinfels Castle in Germany you will encounter six dungeons and a 600-foot long tunnel system, which you can tour yourself. The tunnels allowed those inside the castle walls to hide explosives outside of the castle that would detonate when enemies were attacking.
