It’s been a bit of a different horror movie viewing experience for me this Halloween. Earlier this year, in an effort to save money and to try and watch less TV, we took a dramatic step and did away with our cable all together.

Trust me, I didn’t agree to this lightly. I’ve heard all the cliches about how bad TV is for you in so many ways –waste of time, waste of brain power, bad for the waistline.

But I love watching TV. Always have.

However, since my health took a turn earlier this year, I was committed to doing things that are better for me.

So, I agreed to scrap cable in favor of a Roku HD Streaming Player.

After the initial investment, it’s definitely saved us money each month.

But what about my brain or my time? Nope. I’m now watching more TV than ever due to all the choices I have. Instead of being limited to watching what the cable channels decide to play, it’s like having Video on Demand on steroids.

I can watch pretty much what I what, when I want.

Yes, there are drawbacks. I can’t watch things live and no sports. I miss some of the sports, but rarely watched shows live anyway. I DVRd most everything.

Something I miss enormously though, especially at this time of year, is all the horror movies. Particularly the ones played (admittedly, over and over again) during AMC’s Fearfest and Syfy’s 31 Days of Halloween. Heck, I used to even be able to tune into FEARnet.

I can still get some of Syfy’s content on the Roku. But as for experiencing a Halloween Horror Movie Fest? That’s up to me.

Which, is sort of nice really. Again, I am not at the mercy of some cable company picking the flicks. I’m in charge of my own playlist.

But Amazon Instant Video created a Frightfest movie selection under it’s Prime videos. (That’s something else I’m new to this year and loving: my Amazon Prime Membership. Prime videos are included with membership, and there’s free shipping on prime-specified merchandise. The Amazon Prime Membership has proved well worth it’s weight in a yearly fee.)

Netflix also rounded up some scary movie suggestions. Between Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, I’ve got more movies to watch than time to watch them!

I’ve also discovered a couple new-to-me videos, which has been a lot of fun. Below is a list of horror movies for my Halloween 2013 viewing pleasure.

The only movies not on here are the original Halloween and Halloween II. Usually by this time of year I’ve seen at least one, if not both, once. Luckily I own an old VHS of Halloween. I will be popping it in the ol’ VCR on Halloween. For the past several years I’ve been DVRing it from one channel or another to watch on Halloween. It would not be an October 31st without it.

What kind of movies have you been watching this Halloween season? Any of the below? Any others that are a tradition for you to watch this time of year?

Scream [HD]

Children of the Corn

Jug Face [HD]

(This is a new-to-me one. Haven’t seen it yet, but it looks creepy.)

The Lost Boys

Tucker & Dale vs Evil

(I first saw this at the beginning of this year when someone reminded me about it. OMG! About peed my pants laughing. One of my top comedy-horror movie picks!)

Troll Hunter

Let the Right One In (English Subtitled)

An American Werewolf in London

The Bad Seed

(I don’t believe I’ve ever seen this before, but have been meaning to. Excited Amazon Instant Video will make that possible.)

The Bay

Pumpkinhead

Children Of The Grave

In The Mouth Of Madness (1995)

Grave Secrets

(Had never heard of it until I saw it on Amazon. Interested to check it out.)

Don’t Look Now

Carrie

Re-Animator

Night of the Living Dead – Digitally Remastered

H.H. Holmes: America’s First Serial Killer

Mad Monster Party [HD]

(I feel extremely deprived. I love the original stop motion Christmas Classics –like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer / Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town / Frosty the Snowman– and always wished they had a Halloween version. Well, apparently there was one. This Mad Monster Party. Never knew about it until this year. It’s available on both Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. My inner child is excited to watch. In case you never heard of it either, I posted the trailer below.)
