Movie Monday: Rainbow Over Loch Ness

Rainbow over Loch Ness

For today’s Movie Monday I’m featuring one of our little vids. It includes footage I captured during our shore excursion to Loch Ness. (In search of Nessie of course! I picked this cruise because it afforded us the opportunity to do that.)

We didn’t see Nessie. In fact, our tour guide warned us not to get our hopes up for a Nessie sighting. For a couple of reasons:

  1. There hadn’t been one in a long time.
  2. It was sunny. (Apparently Nessie prefers overcast and rainy weather.)

The Loch Ness portion of our excursion (it also included a visit to Culloden Moor and a lunch stop at the Drumossie Hotel) began at Urquhart Castle.

Urquhart Castle SkyI didn’t intend to take the above photo of a part of the castle to catalog the weather. I just thought it might make a pretty image. However, it works to show you there were clouds in the sky, but that it was mostly sunny.

However, a funny thing happened shortly after we boarded the boat that took us across Loch Ness and back to our awaiting coach: it started raining.

I of course perked up. Hey, the guide had said that was Nessie’s kind of weather!

The rain stopped almost as if on cue when our boat docked at the other side. Back on shore, I turned around to get one last look at the loch (and to make one last scan of its waters), and was surprised to see something all right. Not the Loch Ness Monster, but something pretty neat and magical in its own right: a rainbow.

Neither my photos or video capture just how luminescent it was. It was so vivid in person. And a wonderful consolation prize for not getting a Nessie sighting.

Here’s another shot. If you look close, you can see the top of another rainbow trying to emerge. (Which it successfully did. Sadly it was right as our coach was pulling away to head back to the ship so I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of it. Which is a bummer because the double rainbow was even more vivid and stunning than the single rainbow we were initially treated to.)

Here’s the video if you want to watch that too. In it I joke that maybe Nessie is at the end of the rainbow. Could be. There’s a reward for anyone who captures conclusive evidence of her existence. So she very may well be a potential pot of gold to some monster hunter!
