The highly anticipated prequel to the fantastically successful Conjuring franchise opens in theaters on September 7, 2018. The official trailer dropped this week and has had over 4 million views. This week’s #FunFactFriday involves this movie.

The Nun (2018) is set much earlier that The Conjuring, making it the first in the franchise chronology. The Vatican sends Father Burke (played by Demian Bichir), a priest fighting his own inner demons, and Sister Irene (played by Taissa Farmiga), a young novitiate (one who has not yet made her vows to God), to a cloistered abbey in Romania to investigate the suicide of a young nun. The Romanian abbey is besieged by a Demon Nun, played by Bonnie Aarons. The film’s tagline is Pray for Forgiveness. Sensing that this is the prequel, the praying probably didn’t go as planned.

Now to the #FunFacts:

• The movie was originally going to be released mid-summer; however, it has been pushed back to a September 7^th The production company and distributors are hoping to cash in on the Halloween season—much like It (2017) was able to accomplish.
• Taissa Farmiga, who stars as the young Sister Irene, is the younger sister to Vera Farmiga, who plays Lorraine Warren in the earlier Conjuring films. There is a 21-year difference between the two women.

• The movie was filmed entirely in Romania. The Corvin Castle, also known as Castelul Corvinilor, Hunyadi Castle, or Hunedoara Castle, was the main backdrop for the film. The castle takes its name from Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary, 1458-1490. The noble family was related to Vlad the Impaler.

• As the largest medieval castle in Romania, it has a lot of legends and lore. For the record: Vlad the Impaler was not imprisoned here, although, admittedly, it looks like a place he should have been jailed.
• Built in the 15^th century, the castle was restored to resemble a fairytale castle and serves as a backdrop to such events. Unfortunately, back in the day, the castle was a working castle and has a seedy past. The castle served as a jail; it was also a place of torture. A “Bear Pit” housed a bear or other similar creature that feasted on humans who were thrown down the pit. The castle also houses a chapel.
• The castle’s coat of arms incorporates a raven clenching a gold ring in its mouth.
• The castle is owned and operated by the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony. It is opened daily. A small fee is required for admittance and for photography.
