Thanks to this article from Bustle, “Does Zachary Quinto Believe In Aliens? The ‘In Search Of’ Host Is Investigating Every Possibility,” I learned that the History Channel is rebooting the 1970s paranormal investigation series, In Search Of. (I also learned what the show’s new host, Zachary Quinto, thinks of aliens, which is that he’s open to the possibility.)
But I guess I should note the History Channel isn’t rebooting the series, as in it’s going to happen sometime in the future. It already has rebooted it.
The new In Search Of‘s first episode apparently aired on July 20, 2018. (In which Quinto went in search of proof of alien existence.)
History Channel’s In Search Of
As noted above, Zachary Quinto (most recognizable as “Sylar” from the TV show Heroes and “Spock” in the Star Trek reboot movies), is the host of this new reboot. (He also executive produces it.)
From the mythical to the scientific, each episode will follow Quinto as he investigates a different subject within a dynamic theme – such as alien encounters, mysterious creatures, UFO sightings, time travel and artificial intelligence – and searches for the truth to some of the world’s greatest mysteries. “In Search Of” will explore enigmas told through the eyes of witnesses and scholars with a personal connection to the phenomenon and include immersive demonstrations and experiments that contextualize each episode’s theme.
It airs Fridays at 10 / 9 p.m. Central.

Five Fun Facts about the First In Search Of
- The original TV series was a weekly broadcast from 1977 to 1982.
- It was a spin off of three one-hour made-for-TV documentaries: In Search of Ancient Astronauts (1973), In Search of Ancient Mysteries (1975), and The Outer Space Connection (1975).
- In 2002, the Sci-Fi Channel tried to reboot the series, but only ran a few episodes.
- Rod Serling hosted the one-hour documentaries. He likely would’ve hosted the first series if he hadn’t died in 1975.
- Speaking of hosts, Leonard Nimoy (aka the original Star Trek “Spock”) hosted the original series. Mitch Pileggi (aka “Skinner” of X-Files fame) hosted the Sci-Fi Channel’s version.

I particularly liked this part from the Bustle article:
While In Search Of won’t be the show to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that aliens are real and have crossed paths with human life before, it’s interesting to see an everyman like Quinto confront seemingly impossible phenomenon. He’s an actor by trade, but he seems to be approaching the show not as an authority on the subject matter, but simply as an enthusiast with an interest in educating himself and others. (emphasis added)
That’s what I’m hoping to do with my new web series, Schooled by Ghosts!
Were you a fan of the original In Search Of? Will you (or have you already) watch(ed) the reboot?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
I always thought Leonard Nimoy hosted the original show. Who knew…. 🙂 Looking forward to the reboot.
Well Leonard DID host the orig TV series, but it was Sterling who hosted the hour long TV documentaries that led to the series. I never even knew those hour long docs existed!
