Am I the Only One Who Didn’t Like Halloween?

I’m not talking about Halloween, the holiday. I’m talking about the new Halloween movie, released during the Halloween 2018 season.

I had such high hopes for it. And for good reason. Well, two in particular:

1. It was a Blumhouse Production. No, they don’t always get them right. But I like most of what they put out, and lately they’ve had a couple stellar winners. (Like, Get Out and BlacKkKlansman. The last one is not of the horror genre. It’s more mainstream, but it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen so far in 2018 and I hope it gets some Oscar nods, because it definitely deserves them.)
2. Jamie Lee Curtis was in it.

But also because the original Halloween and Halloween II were the only movies to actually ever scare me. Any other movie I could watch alone at night. It was years before I could do that with these.

As crazy as it may sound, whenever a new one comes out, I always hope it will recreate that perfect terror I experienced when I first saw these.

This newest one did not.

Instead, I found myself wanting to walk out a quarter of the way through. Or maybe it was sooner. Whenever it was that the podcasters got killed. (Well, even before that, but definitely by this part I was over it.)

Oh yeah. I guess that was a bit of a spoiler.

There are podcasters in the movie. Thankfully, not for long, because thankfully they die.

Ouch. Harsh, right? Especially from me.

I don’t often actively root for characters to be offed. When it became clear that Michael Myers was killing indiscriminately and he had somehow tracked them down, I was cheering for Michael to release his beast on them.

Why such hostility?

I guess I shouldn’t have been mad at them. I was disgusted at how a scene with them and his mask was played out. It was so stupid and over the top. That was actually the point where I’d felt I’d wasted my time and money on the movie.

Luckily we’d only paid $5 a ticket for it. And we were on vacation and didn’t have anything else to do that night, so I didn’t feel as bad as I might’ve if I’d paid full price.

Here’s another spoiler: everyone basically dies in the movie. Except the heroines of the story.

I’m all for girl power, but this was so forced and obvious it sucked the fun out of it.

Speaking of suck, if you asked me for one word to describe Halloween (2018), I’d tell you: “Sucky.”

Plot Holes

Where was the plot? Left in the looney bin.

And don’t even get me started on how it totally ignored Halloween H20.

Okay, scratch that. I’m started so here we go.

Halloween H20 got horrible reviews, and, no. It wasn’t even near as good as the original or its sequel. But I liked it better than this one.

Heck, I re-watch that one when I come across it. I will never re-watch this one. Unless I get dementia and forget that I’ve already seen it and how bad it was.

I may have to check out Halloween H20 to verify, but where was any mention of her daughter in that one? She had a son.

Suddenly in this one she has a daughter. Who was taken away from her. But not before she trained her in survivalist and self defense techniques ad nauseam.

Totally ignored the story line where she had moved to California under an assumed name with a son. And killed Michael there when he’d somehow tracked her down.

But of course she’d killed him with an ax then. How would they explain that resurrection? Better to just ignore it like it never happened.

That’s about all the producers of this one did flawlessly.

Review

Sorry, but this time I’m in the minority.

I was not charmed or delighted like everyone else I know who saw it seemed to be. This was a one skull out of fiver for me.
