1. Stonehenge
Stonehenge still remains a significant monument in England. This Wiltshire-situated monument looks like a well-planned ring of massive standing stones, with each stone measuring about 4 m by 2.1 m and weighing about 25 tons. Archaeologists believe that Stonehenge was built about 5000 years ago. Some professional essay writers even believe that it must have taken several stages of construction to erect such a fascinating structure.
Stonehenge is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and it has hosted many renowned scientists including Charles Darwin. Over one million tourists that visit Stonehenge annually.
While the purpose of building Stonehenge still remains a mystery, some people believe that the site originally served as a burial site. Scientists suggest that the stones used for constructing Stonehenge must have been transported over 150 miles away. The means of transportation also still remains a mystery.
2. Atlantis
Atlantis is an ancient lost city which many people believe existed and sank beneath the ocean 9,000 years ago.
The origin of Atlantis can be traced to Plato’s books, ‘Critias’ and ‘Timaeus’, written around 360 B. C. –back when there was no writing help. In his books, the Greek philosopher described Atlantis as a great island that sank in the Atlantic Ocean because the gods decided to punish its inhabitants for their pride. Prior to the story in Plato’s books, the history of Atlantis wasn’t mentioned anywhere else.
According to Plato, the story emanated from some Egyptian priests who passed the story down a few generations before Plato got it.
Despite the uncertainty in the story, it’s interesting to know that a lot of people actually believe that Atlantis existed and many have lost their lives and fortunes in search of the lost city. In fact, in 2018 Chapman University carried out a survey of paranormal beliefs and discovered that 56.9% of Americans believe in the existence of ancient cities like Atlantis.
Many people claimed to have found the ruins of Atlantis in various parts of the world, but to date, the lost city still remains a mystery.
3. Qin Shi Huang’s Tomb
Qin Shi Huang was a powerful emperor in China. He is known for uniting China and making his empire very strong. He is also known for other famous projects like the Great Wall of China and the terracotta warriors and horses.
During his reign, he built a great mausoleum where he planned to rule after his death. People believe that numerous treasures and other artifacts were buried with Qin Shi Huang in the huge underground palace, which is as big as five football pitches.
Various investigations and excavations have proven the existence of Qin Shi Huang’s tomb, but some mysteries still surround the content of the tomb. Archaeologists believe that the treasures in the tomb were buried with mercury. People are still working to understand the mystery of Qin Shi Huang’s tomb.
4. The Bog Bodies
Many researchers have tried to explain the religious activities and rituals that took place in Northern Europe during the iron age, including the mystery of the bog bodies.
The bog bodies are ancient dead bodies preserved in peat bogs. Archaeologists believe that these bodies are more than 2300 years old. The mummified bodies were well-preserved and show recognizable features such as hair, nails and body marks. Scientists have shown that lack of oxygen in the peat bogs is the main factor responsible for the prolonged preservation.
Features like slashed throats and deep cuts found on the bog bodies suggest that they were victims of iron age rituals or violent attacks in Northern Europe. Many scientists proposed various hypotheses about the identity of the bodies, stating that they were ancient criminals. A renowned researcher at Bestessays Uk even suggested that they could be bodies of ancient slaves or commoners.
Today, many mysteries about the bog bodies still remain unsolved.
5. Mohenjo Daro
Mohenjo Daro is an ancient civilization discovered in Pakistan. Having features like well-planned drainage system and structures, archaeologists suggest that the ancient city must have been inhabited by skilled urban planners.
Some scientists also believe that Mohenjo Daro is the home of ancient traders who were highly-organized, because of the standardized tools and seals found there.
Mohenjo Daro has no trace of palace, temples or monuments, suggesting that there was no central government in the city. Mohenjo Daro has many wells strategically distributed throughout the city and almost every house has a bathing area and drainage system. All these features indicate a clean and well-organized society.
However, the mysteries of who the inhabitants were, how they vanished and what led to the ruin of the ancient city are still unsolved.
Conclusion
There are mysterious ruins and structures all over the world. Some unsolved mysteries still exist today, not because we don’t have the technology to decipher them, but the what remains yields too little clues to lead researchers to a consensus.
