Long before chia seeds became a trendy health food add-in, there were Chia Pets.
Which, side note, you definitely would not want to eat. They’re meant for growing, not consuming. In case you were thinking, “Hmm…I could have a cool chia pet that sprouts my own chia seed farm.”
Nope. (Sorry to burst your bubble.)
If you’re like me and old enough to remember when Chia Pets first came out in the Seventies, you may recall the As-Seen-On-TV plants were an instant hit.
Well, maybe they were more of a joke than a hit, but they certainly had a catchy theme song. Thanks to YouTube, I found a Chia Pet commercial. It’s not the original commercial, but it does have the song.
**Warning** Don’t listen if you’re susceptible to ear worms. I don’t want mine ringing all day because you’re cussing me that this tune is stuck in your head!
Anyway, among the strange Stranger Things items I found (and added to a Stranger Things list in the Skareporium) was a Dustin Stranger Things Chia Pet. Which led to the discovery of seven more spooky chic Chia Pet planters I had no idea existed.
Here’s all eight of them.
What about you? Did you know any of these existed?
1. Chia Pet Troll
2. Chia Pet Groot
3. Chia Pet Yoda
4. Chia Pet E.T.
5. Chia Pet Gizmo
6. Chia Pet Shaggy
7. Chia Pet Dustin Stranger Things
8. Chia Pet Slimer
Check-In
I always figured Chia Pets were more of a joke, but I’d consider getting the Slimer or the Gizmo. What about you? Have you ever had a Chia Pet? Would you consider adopting one of these?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
