I was late updating the Christmas Haunted Houses on the Halloween Cons & Haunted House Events page this year, so I’m late getting this post out. Several haunts were open the weekend of December 6th and 7th to celebrate Krampusnacht. (December 5th every year. It’s one of my favorite listings on the Weird Holidays & Observances page.)
I missed those, but some are also open for the Friday the 13th weekend or for other weekends later in December. Many are also “Krampus-themed,” extending the beast’s reign of terror a little longer.
Some haunted houses open later in the month, closer to Christmas or even the weekend after. One is even open the first weekend of the New Year!
So if you’re screaming for a fright Christmas, Happy Horror Days. Here’s highlights of what you can find where to keep those slay bells ringing and the creepy festivities going all month long.
To see everything, check both the December Halloween Cons & Haunted House and the December Ghost Tours & Ghost Hunting listings.

Friday the 13th wins that honor.

Haunt with a Chicken Event
I’m not sure what a “Chicken Event” is, but I noticed in a post on their Facebook page that Mortar Creek Haunted Trail Inaugural Christmas/New Years Haunt in Quitman, Arkansas, has one.
Most Spirited States
Christmas has become a popular time of year for haunted attractions to open. Krampus helps, and this year having a Friday the 13th has given an extra reason.
I haven’t been tracking the number of haunted houses open during non-Halloween holidays over the years, but this year seems like there are more than ever.
There still aren’t haunted houses open in each state, but some states have multiple haunted houses. Which means you could “haunted house hop” if you wanted all December long in the following states, which I picked because they have five or more different haunted houses open this December.
- Georgia – There are six haunted house open somewhere in the state from December 7 to December 28.
- Illinois – Friday the 13th weekend is the biggie in this state, with seven different haunted houses open across the state.
- Indiana – IN is also going big on Friday the 13th weekend with seven different haunted houses open across the state.
- Pennsylvania – Friday the 13th weekend is again the big one with the five haunted houses open in PA.
- Tennessee – Six haunted attractions across the state will operate from December 7 to the end of the month. One, Dread Hollow, is even squeaking in an opening on January 4, 2020 to ring in the New Year and new decade!
- Texas – Everything’s bigger in Texas, right? Eight haunted houses will be open during the weekends from December 7th through the 21st in the Lone Star state. Like the other spirited states on this list, the most popular weekend is –you guessed it– Friday the 13th.
Open the Weekend After Christmas
Here are the six haunted houses open the weekend after Christmas, in case you want to get a jump start on any getting fit resolutions. (Depending on your fear threshold, that is. But it could be a great cardio workout, right?)
- December 13-14 & 27-28, 2019: Krampus: A Haunted Christmas Chapter 3: Holiday Spirits – Denver, CO
- December 14 & 28, 2019: A Haunted Holiday at Netherworld – Stone Mountain, GA
- December 20-21 & 27-28, 2019: A Haunted Christmas Carol at Containment Haunted House – Lithia Springs, GA
- December 20-21 & 27-28, 2019: XMas Scream at 3 HaunTs – Shepherd, TX
- December 28, 2019: Mortar Creek Haunted Trail Inaugural Christmas/New Years Haunt – Quitman, AR
- December 28, 2019: New Year’s Nightmare at Dread Hollow – Chattanooga, TN
New Year’s Haunt
I mentioned this one above, but it needs a spot of its own too, because it’s the only one of its kind I came across and could claim the title of being the first haunted house open for the 2020 season. It’s New Year’s Nightmare at Dread Hollow in Chattanooga, TN.
Check-In
Have you ever been to a Christmastime haunted house?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
I haven’t been to a Christmastime haunted house, but it sounds like a fun thing to do.
I always like what an adventurous soul you have!
