20 Keys, Curious Cabinets, and American Hauntings: A Chat with Troy Taylor

Troy Taylor is a busy paranormal authorpreneur, ghost tour guide, and speaker. Towards the end of last year, I saw one of his Instagram posts about his latest book in the Cabinet of Curiosities series: 20 Keys from Haunted Hotel Rooms.

All of his books sound interesting, but I hold a special affinity in my heart for haunted hotels. Maybe because one of my first paranormal experiences as an adult happened in one? (At what was then called the Shilo Inn in Salt Lake City, Utah.)

Anyway, I thought, “I’d love to talk to him. I wonder if he’d be on my podcast?”

There was only one way to find out, so I sent him a message on Facebook. I was hoping for a reply, but not really expecting one. And certainly not a same day one!

At first he said he didn’t think he’d have time, but he’d think about it. I was bummed, expecting a brush off, but nope. He again wrote back pretty quick and we set something up.

I was over the moon! (And I understand I have his wife, Lisa, to thank for persuading him. Thanks, Lisa!)

Here’s a taste of what we discussed:

  • What was the catalyst for the Cabinet of Curiosities series in general?
  • What are some of the haunted hotels he covers in his newest book?
  • Why is it more than just a travel guide?
  • When is 2020’s Haunted America Conference?
  • What kind of phobia does Troy have about hotel room doors?
  • Are real keys scarier than modern card keys?
  • Why is Bisbee one of Troy’s favorite towns in America?
  • What happened to Elizabeth Montgomery at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem while the cast stayed there during the filming of Bewitched?
  • How many books does Troy release each year and how does he get so much done?

Troy really enjoys what he does, and that passion, enthusiasm and knowledge are evident during the chat. He’s a super interesting speaker and I’m stoked I had the chance to talk with him like this, but now I’m on a mission to attend one of his events –or, better yet, the Haunted America conference!
