Shudder’s five-part series, Cursed Films, was released last month and was a huge hit for the streaming platform. The series focuses on five movies that were plagued by death, misfortune, and eerie happenings.
The films in question are:
- The Exorcist
- Poltergeist
- Twilight Zone: The Movie
- The Crow
- The Omen
Each hour-long episode focuses on one of the films and does a great job at capturing the true stories behind the “curses,” while also letting the viewers hear from those who worked on the movie sets. Some believe the curses are real, while others are skeptical and question the legitimacy of whether a curse can actually exist.
However, one thing is certain throughout each episode: The cast and crew of these movies went through absolute hell. From on-set deaths, to murderous cast members, and, in one notorious instance, real skeletons that were used as “props.”
It’s logical to assume that some will question whether or not a film can truly be cursed. But that fact becomes almost irrelevant with this series because the true power of the stories being told here isn’t whether or not there’s a curse, but rather, the simple fact that all of these events actually happened.
The only reason this show is even believable is because much of what it talks about is well-documented common knowledge, otherwise the audience might be tempted to question if this was all sensationalism.
But it’s not. And that alone is terrifying. What makes everything all the stranger is that horror films (especially horror films that dabble in the supernatural) seem to be more prone to disaster than other movies. Outside of the horror the genre, how many movies with on-set disasters can you name? That very fact alone forces the viewer to wonder.
As for Cursed Films, if you’re looking for an intriguing story about the past that perfectly blends horror, the supernatural, and true crime together, you’ll want to binge Cursed Films.

In particular, the sad and odd occurrences around The Omen freak me out.
I stayed up late and binged this last night. Whoa. I was blown away. Very well done series. The Omen with the lightning strikes was wild, but the Twilight Zone one…I have to admit I was like, “I never heard about it being cursed.” I wasn’t very excited about it but then I watched and was absorbed and cried after being reminded of the horrible helicopter accident and learning more about how it went down. Awful. But a really good, thoughtful and thought-provoking series.
Yes, the episode about The Twilight Zone was the most intense by far. Until the show I hadn’t actually ever heard about the crash – So insane and heartbreaking.
