The other day my A Haunt Mess podcast co-host, Sara, asked if I’d heard of, or done, Randonautica.
“Rando-what-i-ca? What the heck is that?”
“You’ve got to try it. I think you’ll really like it. My girls introduced me to it and my sister and I have been having fun doing it while she’s here.”
I wasn’t sure what it was all about. Similar to geocaching? There was one way to find out. Check out the app Sara had told me about.
Randonautica in a Nutshell
The app is called Randonautica. It asks, “What if there is more wonder to wandering?”
Randonauting is what the app helps you do, and a randonaut is what you become when you use the app.
And what is it that the app does?
It is “the world’s first quantumly generated choose your own adventure reality game. Explore the world you never knew existed.”
How It Works
The app uses a random number generator that converts a number into a set of coordinates for you to follow.
First, you choose how far you want the radius to be, and you also choose whether you want one coordinate or multiple.
Second, you pick what kind of quantum point you want. Here are the three options:
- Attractor – Center of the highest cluster of quantum dots
- Void – Center of the least cluster of quantum dots
- Anamoly – Will deliver the strongest of either the attractor or the void option
Third, and here’s where it gets wild, you to set an intention.
Your intention can be anything. Love, peace, creativity, wonder, weird…it’s up to you. There are no wrong answers to intentions, but it is suggested you try to set a theme for your journey. This will help open your mind on your journey to your random point.
Last, you pick your entropy source. They suggest you choose the default ANU if you’re not sure. It’s the main source, which is the quantum random number generator at the Australian National University.
Anomalies
Sometimes you don’t get an anomaly on your first try. Why?
Apparently, if the cluster of random points is statically improbable, it won’t generate a number. You’re supposed to keep trying until it does.
Reading the Quantum Point Coordinates
It looks scary and technical because it is.
There are z-scores, power scores and bearings, but don’t worry. Just open up the coordinates in your Maps and you’ll be off on your journey.
Best Places to Connect with Other Randonauts
There are three places where Randonauts seem to gravitate:
- TikTok
Share your adventures and discoveries with others and see where the app lead them on their journeys.

Unless you’ve already tried it. In that case, do tell!
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
So this morning I set an intention to have an adventure of a questing nature. A weird type of experience. My next thought was ‘How the hell do I start that? Where do I look? Que your blogpost in my inbox! Thank you!
Okay that is cuckoo crazy. You’ll have to tell me if you try it and what happened BUT…this makes my experience with it much cooler. Thanks for letting me know!
