Discussing the Haunting at Home Results with Jim Dean

Jim Dean is the Creative Director of The Haunted Walk, a ghost tour company that operates in three cities in Canada: Kingston, Ottawa, and Toronto. He’s the one that contacted me about trying The Haunting at Home Paranormal Adventure. Which I did with a couple of girlfriends and we had a blast.

I have wanted to talk with Jim ever since, but especially after he sent the results so far from the Haunting at Home experiment. They were fascinating. Especially the one about how the majority of experiments, 74%, were conducted in a house or townhouse. 23% took place in an apartment or a condo. However, regardless of where the experiment was conducted, whether it was a house or an apartment, the percentage of groups reporting activity was the same: 67%.

What was up with that? I wanted to know if he had any thoughts about that, and I said I’d ask him about it if I ever got the chance. Guess what? I did!

The Haunting at Home Paranormal Adventure

I had so many questions for him I didn’t even know where to begin. But one of the first I asked was how was the fantastic idea for the Haunting at Home born?

Basically it was a chance to give people something to do during lockdown but also to gain some insights on paranormal activity and how people experience that…if they even might.

It resulted in some eye-opening experiences and results. Not all of them scary, but of course there were some. But not as many as you might think. What surprised Jim was that people were having really wholesome experiences.

They also weren’t seeing alarming violent hauntings at all either, which really didn’t surprise him because outside of Hollywood they don’t really encounter that sort of thing at all on the Haunted Walk ghost tours and ghost hunts and such.

I also wondered how much longer could people participate in the experiment. Did it have an end date? Yes. It should be available another 90 days or so after the end of this year, which would be about March 2021.

Stories from the Haunting at Home Experience

Jim shared a few of the stories that came out of people trying the Haunting at Home experiments, including

1. Candles flickering. In this case, people used flame candles instead of electric and noticed that with no wind in the room, one started to flicker, then another, then the third. And then each stopped in the order they started, which was really unusual.
2. White noise. One of the experiments involves listening to white noise. Jim was surprised to hear people report hearing music, everything from old-timey sounding tunes to country. Sometimes people in the same groups reported hearing different music.
3. Family connections. One of the cool stories he shared was about someone having a personal connection to some of the information that came out during an experiment that involved their deceased grandfather. That fell in the wholesome and heartwarming Haunting at Home results category.

Other “The Haunting” Experiments?

This one was so neat I wondered if he had more planned? Perhaps.

However, before Covid hit, they held “The Haunting” experiments as part of ghost tours and ghost hunting events they would hold in haunted places, like the Laurier House. Which Jim said looks like a real-life Disney Haunted Mansion which instantly piqued my interest!

The Prime Minister’s Seances

Jim also shared that the Laurier House was the former residence of two of Canada’s Prime Ministers, one of them being William Lyon Mackenzie King. Apparently, he was a fascinating man who held seances to contact relatives, even his dead dogs, and used the occult to make certain decisions.

When the vaccines start working and its safe to travel again, I’m heading to Canada to experience a Haunted Walk event in the Laurier House!

Black Creek Pioneer Village

He also shared a tale about two of the Haunted Walk’s ghost tour guides that were conducting a tour at Black Creek Pioneer Village. Two guests had arrived late, so the two tour guides were accompanying them to catch up with their group.

The Pioneer Village is one of those living history type museums where people who work there are often in period costumes. Ahead of them on the boardwalk was a woman dressed in period clothing.

As a joke, one of the guides said, “We all see the woman in front of us, right?”

Except, they didn’t. One of the tour-goers did, but the other did not. Nor did the other tour guide. That was a good story!

Virtual Haunted Campfires

I also asked about the Virtual Haunted Campfires they held this past October. I thought that was a great idea and wondered if they’d do more.

Again, perhaps.
