I learned a disheartening bit of news yesterday. Deadline reported that Amazon canceled Truth Seekers, which premiered this past fall and was a super fun show to binge. The following gif sums up my reaction to the news that the ghost hunting comedy was not renewed for a second season.

Sad little girl crying

Why is Truth Seekers canceled?

It’s a super perplexing move, because not only did Truth Seekers get good reviews on Amazon (4.7 out of 5 stars with an 86% 5-star rating), it also got good reviews elsewhere too. Such as IMDB, where users rated it as 7.1 out of 10. At Rotten Tomatoes, it got a 76% average Tomatometer score with an 83% average audience score. And 91% of Google users liked it.

So what gives? Why the cancelation?

I don’t know. Deadline didn’t report any specifics. Only that Nick Frost made this announcement on his Instagram:

“Sadly, Truth Seekers will not be returning for a second season. Truth Seekers has not been renewed, which is a massive kick in the willy for me. We really put our all into this – our heart and soul, and blood in some cases, so to not come back is really sad for us. It’s a shame. I think we had lots of lovely ghost stories to tell – stories that will remain now untold. If you liked the show, thank you. And if you didn’t, are you happy now? Happy now?”

Truth Seekers Storyline

Truth Seekers was about Gus (Nick Frost), a senior broadband installer who hunts ghosts in his spare time. Sometimes on the job too. His wife, who died, was the real paranormal investigator in the family. She was obsessed with the work of Dr. Peter Toynbee (Julian Barratt), who turns out to be a bad guy chasing immortality and will stop at nothing to achieve it.

While on the job, Gus and his new work partner, Elton John (Samson Kayo), meet Astrid (Emma D’Arcy). Neither Astrid nor Elton are who they seem, but both will eventually help Gus foil Toynbee, along with Elton’s sister, Helen (Susan Wokoma) and Gus’s “dad” (who we find out is really his father-in-law, but Gus calls him dad), Richard (Malcolm McDowell).

It was really an excellent series with just the right blend of comedy mixed with a few scary bits. I’m really bummed we’re not going to see more of it or get the answers to a bunch of questions the series left off with. Like what kind of behind-the-scenes evil plan Gus’s boss, Dave (Simon Pegg), was working on.

Gah!

Well, all I know how to do is launch a #SaveTruthSeekers campaign and see if it sticks!
