Loved Lovecraft Country? Save the Date for “Them” on Amazon

Them Covenant Amazon original poster

Them is a forthcoming Amazon original limited horror anthology series that explores terror in America. Think American Horror Story, except instead of being created by Ryan Murphy, it’s executive produced by Little Marvin with Lena Waithe.

Amazon recently released the trailer for the first season, Them: Covenant, which premieres on Amazon video on April 9. It looks wicked spooky on multiple levels. I instantly felt Lovecraft Country vibes, and others are noting distinct Jordan Peele comparisons too.

Some of the trailer also reminded me of parts of HBO’s Watchmen, specifically the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Different time period, but the simmering tension…it’s evident things are not going to go well for the poor family just looking for a better life and little peace.

Let’s take a closer look at this series and see if it’s one you’ll be adding to your list to stream in April too.

Them: Covenant Storyline

The first season follows the Emory family, a black family from North Carolina, who are embarking on the Great Migration of the 1950s.  They arrive at their promising new home in Los Angeles to immediately find they can’t outrun racism in their all-white neighborhood. “Their idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, both next door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.”

Them: Covenant Cast & Crew

The first season stars Deborah Ayorinde (Lucky Emory), Ashley Thomas (Henry Emory), Shahadi Wright Joseph (Ruby Emory), Melody Hurd (Gracie Emory), Ryan Kwanten (George Bell), Christopher Heyerdahl (Hiram Epps), Jeremiah Birkett (Da Tap Dance Man, who seems creepy AF!), Liam McIntyre (Clarke Wendell), and Alison Pill (Betty Wendell).

It’s executive produced and written in part by Little Marvin. Other writers include Dominic Orlando (The OA, Mindhunter), Francine Volpe (P-Valley, The First), Christina Ham (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Sweet Tooth) , David Matthews (Them is his first series writing credit), and Seth Zvi Rosenfeld (who’s also a co-executive producer).

Them: Covenant Teaser Trailer

This trailer was released at the beginning of March. (Does Pill remind anyone else of a younger Jessica Lange? There’s a part where she smiles and I swear she’s channeling the same energy Lange did to master her parts of a well-coifed viper in the American Horror Story seasons she was in.)
