Things Heard & Seen: Netflix’s Cursed House & Murder Mystery Movie

Official Poster for Things Heard and Seen

Was there a competition between producers we weren’t made aware of to see who could release the best haunted house movie in 2021? Because seriously. Today is April Fools’ Day, but no joke. I have never covered so many upcoming haunted house movie releases in two weeks as I have this year.

It all started with The Haunting of Hill House-esque trailer for The Inheritance, which will hit on-demand and DVD on April 13. That looked intriguing enough, but next came The Banishing, which starts streaming on Shudder on April 15.

Then there was The Resort, which isn’t a haunted house movie exactly, but it does involve a haunted property where people stay while on vacation. Or did, until it was forced to shut down. It’ll be in theaters and on demand April 30.

Releasing in theaters July 16 is the taut and twisted haunted house movie starring Rebecca Hall, The Night House.

Even Amazon is releasing a haunted house offering of sorts in April (April 9), except it’s not a movie but a series, Them.

I guess it was Netflix’s turn. They’ve combined a cursed house with an unsolved murder to create Things Heard & Seen. Let’s explore what it’ll be about.

Things Heard & Seen Storyline

Here’s the description on Netflix:

A young woman discovers that both her husband and their new home harbor sinister secrets after they leave Manhattan for small-town life.

It’s based on the book by Elizabeth Brundage, All Things Cease to Appear.

InStyle described it as a blend of “murder mystery with horror.”

And I loved the way they summed it up: “Ghosts, murders, and the idyllic Hudson Valley? It’s a long way from the ABBA-tinged Greek isles, but Amanda Seyfried’s new Netflix thriller, Things Heard & Seen, is sure to intrigue just about everyone’s collective fascination with true crime — even though the movie isn’t based on any actual events.”

It stars James Norton as “George Clare” and Amanda Seyfried as his wife “Catherine Clare,” as well as Karen Allen (Animal House, Raiders of the Lost Ark and so many more) as “Mare Laughton,” Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul) as ” Justine Sokolov,” and Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things) as “Willis.”

Great. Now I’m going to have “Whatcha talkin’ about, Willis?” stuck in my head the rest of the day…

It starts streaming on Netflix on April 29.
