Cheekwood's Museum of Art with a Chihuly sculpture gracing the front lawn

I love Cheekwood. I think it’s one of Nashville’s gems. If I was a ghost it’s the kind of place I’d like to haunt.

I once asked one of the volunteers if she’d heard of any ghost stories there. She nodded and smiled and said, “Of course. Doesn’t every old estate have its ghost lore? Some have said they’ve seen or felt things, but there’s really not been anything specific. Just people trying to scare each other when they have to work late or whatever.”

That’s sort of my way of making a disclaimer: since there are whispers of ghost stories, but nothing concrete, Cheekwood isn’t an actual Haunt Jaunt. (No matter how much I’d like it to be. But come on, can you blame me? Look at the photos below. This is one of my favorite views of the mansion, which is now the Museum of Art. Doesn’t it look like it should be haunted? To me it has that romantic, Gothic kind of look which just screams for ghosts to complete it.)

Alas, there’s no ghosts. But I was desperate to write about Cheekwood and share it on the blog. The Chihuly exhibit sort of provided a good excuse. Why not share the photos I took during Semi-Wordless Wednesday?

After all, to me the amazing glass sculptures gave the grounds a fantastical, otherworldly sort of whimsy. I could only imagine the supernatural glow they must have cast at night. (We went during the day, but the sculptures also lit up so they had evening admissions some nights too.)

The Chihuly exhibit has since moved on, but if it comes to a venue near you I highly recommend going. And if you’re ever in Nashville, I also highly recommend a visit to Cheekwood.

Chihuly balls lend a new perspective to meditate on in the serenity of the Japenese Garden

What do I spy just above the waterfall?
I spy a boat swarming with Chihuly!

What mysteries and delights do these stairs lead to in the garden?
My, what interesting reeds growing in the Grotto pond

The path wound through the woods and past the stone tool shed in the Howe Wildflower Garden
and led us to more Chihuly sculptures in the gardens beyond

quiet and graceful, yet also vibrant, art amongst nature's backdrop
