Does Ghosts of Devil’s Perch mean The Holzer Files is canceled?

Holzer files canceled

Travel Channel recently announced that two Holzer Files stars, Dave Schrader and Cindy Kaza, have a new series starting August 21, Ghosts of Devil’s Perch. It will also stream the same day on discovery+. But what does it mean for their other show? Is the new one a sequel to The Holzer Files or has it been canceled altogether?

Let’s follow the clues and see if we can’t piece them together to come up with the answer. (Spoiler: We can. I’m just experimenting with being a little more creative in presenting the information.)

Clue #1: The Premise of Ghosts of Devil’s Perch

Our first clue lies in what the Ghosts of Devil’s Perch is about. Nowhere in the description does it reference having anything to do with The Holzer Files.

A mystery is buried beneath the streets of Butte, Montana, and the spirits tethered to the historic mining town’s past are rising to the surface with clues.

The discovery of copper in the 1880s turned Butte’s Copper Barons into some of the wealthiest men in America. But the hills that glittered in the sun also cast sinister shadows of greed and vice at night. This led some to brand the mountain town “The Devil’s Perch.”

In recent years, the town’s worked on revitalizing itself. But it seems every renovation project digs up a paranormal nightmare, with residents and businesses reporting terrifying ghostly encounters. In an unlikely partnership, Mayor J.P. Gallagher and Sheriff Ed Lester have called in an elite team of paranormal investigators to help.

When investigator Dave Schrader, tech expert K.D. Stafford, and psychic medium Cindy Kaza arrive in Butte, they find paranormal activity that startles even them. The team unearths disturbances ranging from feuds between rival mine owners to lovers resorting to violence to vice-fueled horrors lurking in the town’s past.

As the disturbing cases begin to form a pattern, the team discovers an army of trapped spirits crying for help. They refocus their efforts on finding who —or what— is causing so much anguish. Resorting to threats and violence, the dark entity beneath Butte goes on the attack. The spiritual awakening is in full force and quickly forces the team to question if they’ll make it out of Devil’s Perch unharmed.

Will they solve —and survive— this investigation? And will the town continue to be haunted by spirits of the past, or will they help it finally break free?

Clue #2: Travel Channel Lineup

The next clue was revealed when Travel Channel and discovery+ announced the rest of their paranormal programming for 2022. They never mentioned that The Holzer Files was canceled. However, it also wasn’t included on their list of returning series or in the look-ahead 2022-2023 shows sneak peek either.

Clue #3: Dave Schrader’s Tweets

Who says Twitter isn’t good for anything? It’s a great place to find info straight from the horse’s mouth. In this case, it comes from one of The Holzer Files stars himself, Dave Schrader.

In fact, he shared two Tweets about the matter. The first was on Jun 4 when he broke the news there wouldn’t be a Holzer Files season 3.

The next was on July 25, when he re-confirmed that The Holzer Files had been canceled and it was time to “let it go.” (A message he delivered with help from a cutie patootie assistant!)

The Answer

In case it wasn’t perfectly clear from any of the clues, The Holzer Files has been canceled. Ghosts of Devil’s Perch is also not a sequel or spin-off, but a whole new series that starts Aug. 21.

  1. Even good things end, but that makes room for new good things, so it’s okay that Holzer Files is canceled. And it’s cool that Cindy and Dave have a new show!

Okay, Priscilla, I just have to tell you I am SO honored to know you. You’re a beacon of goodness in an often very dark world. This comment is another example of the even-keeled aspect I love about you!

  3. It is a spin off of both Ghosts of Shepherdstown and Morgan city with a new cast. Even the same production company.

  4. I’m fine with them going to a new show as long as they investigate as they did in the old one. They uncovered hidden histories in Holzer Files and will hope for the same with Devil’s Perch.

  5. Author

They did uncover some neat “hidden histories” (love how you put that!) didn’t they? I think they might do the same with Devil’s Perch. We’ll see… Thanks for the comment!

  6. Sorry to see the Holzer Files go but glad to see Dave and Cindy back doing their investigations.
Just think the producers need to cut down on all the loud shocking unnecessary noises and flashes. The show doesn’t need it, it has enough good suspense without it.

Great observation, Alonso. Usually “less is more” works for most anything but it’s often forgotten and it sounds like Devil’s Perch could benefit from it. Maybe they’ll take it into account if there’s a season 2? Love that you took the time to weigh in though. Thank you!

  8. I’m sad to see Holzer Files go. Devil’s Perch was 3rd in a series of “The Haunting of …” mini series and it gets an entirely new team each show. I really loved Cindy and Dave together and sad to see that go. Maybe KD, Cindy and Dave will get their own show because they were an awesome team! ??

It could happen, Jenn. Maybe they’ll even star in a 2nd season of Devil’s Perch. We may find out soon. Discovery might release a greenlight statement in the next month or two if there is one. But I have a feeling we’ll see them on another show of some kind.
