“Crystal Lake? Is that really happening?” That was my first thought when I saw the photo a friend messaged me on Instagram. It depicted a teenager wearing a yellow shirt with “Camper” written on the back. He was standing in a lake with Jason Vorhees of Friday the 13th fame reflected in the water behind him. Between them was the title “Crystal Lake” with “Peacock” and “Coming Soon” beneath that.
So I asked my friend, but that was a dumb question because I had no intention of giving her a chance to answer. I was already Googling to figure it out for myself. Here’s what I discovered.
Friday the 13th Prequel Series Greenlit at Peacock
The photo was no joke. On Nov. 1, 2022, Peacock’s blog announced that Crystal Lake really is coming to the platform. But when?
Crystal Lake Premiere Date
No word on that yet. Maybe sometime this year? (Hopefully? Although, maybe it’s better not to rush it.)
If it did happen in 2023, however, it’d be a safe bet to guesstimate it could be sometime this September or October. However, it would also sort of be awesome if they released it on Jason Vorhees’s birthday, June 13. (Which is, of course, one of the birthdays commemorated on the Weird Holidays & Observances page.)
Crystal Plot, Cast, and Crew
Peacock’s blog said that as of now, “[e]xact details of the series are being kept under wraps.”
No cast has been announced yet, either. All we know is that it’s coming from A24, who’s no stranger to horror. In fact, three of their movies were among the top 24 horror movies of 2022: Bodies Bodies Bodies, X, and Pearl.
Bryan Fuller (who also wrote and developed Hannibal) is the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Other executive producers include Marc Toberoff (who produced two more of the top 24 horror films of 2022, both of which were on Hulu, Prey and Hellraiser), Victor Miller, and Rob Barsamian.

Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
