At first blush, Austin, Texas, may seem like a peculiar place for Lugosi’s Vampire Museum to open. However, Austin is sort of evolving into a vampire hub. What they lack in Dracula-inspired lore, they make up for with what many might consider his familiars: bats. Because of the colony of Mexican Free-tailed bats that claimed one of its downtown bridges as a roosting habitat, Austin has adopted the moniker Bat City.
Is that why Austin hosts a Nosferatu Festival? I don’t know, but I know I’ve listed that and the Austin Witchfest on the Paracons & Horror Fests page.
I think that’s maybe why the “coming soon” announcement about Lugosi’s Vampire Museum on The Glass Coffin’s Instagram caught my eye. It was something else spooky and vampire in Austin.
They didn’t state when the museum was opening, but they did include a short video giving a little sneak peek.

I reached out to inquire for further details, and to ask for permission to use the photo of the exterior of The Glass Coffin Vampire Parlour in this post. To my delight, Joey Slayne, the owner, wrote back, granting permission to use the photo. As far as the museum’s opening, he said, “hoping sometime in August.”
I checked today to see if there had been any further announcements. Not yet. But with Spooky Season right around the corner, I’m willing to bet it won’t be much longer.
But I realize I now have even more questions for Slayne about Lugosi’s Vampire Museum. What will be in it? Will it be free to check it out during a visit to the Parlour, or is there a separate entrance fee? And what about the building housing the Parlour? What’s its story? Any ghosts?
Austin is a super groovy city. I may have to make another trip there to answer my questions in person. For now, let’s check out what the Glass Coffin is all about.
The Glass Coffin Vampire Parlour
Since it describes itself so perfectly on its home page, I’ll just share that:
We are an Antique and Oddities shop in Austin, Texas catering to the Undead and Lovers of the Macabre. We carry unusual vintage items & antiques, oddities, occult books, dark home decor and a delectable assortment of candles, incense and supplies for your spellcrafting needs.
But sometimes they also host events in The Velvet Casket, which also serves as “a gothic parlor to lounge in during the day.”
And if you can’t get to Austin to shop in person, they also list some of their wares on their site for your online shopping pleasure.

Have you ever been to Austin?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
Nope. I have a travel guide for it, and considered moving there once upon a time. I’d love to see this place, for sure!
Sounds interesting!
My brother lives in that area. I doubt he’d go there though.
Ooo! I didn’t know Austin was somewhere you’d considered once upon a time. I hope to get to go back. Neat city…and I’d like to check out this Vampire Parlour now too. lol
Ooo! Do you ever go visit him? Would you go? Would he come with you if you went to check it out?
