A Haunting in Venice poster

Psychics. Screams. A seance. A Haunting in Venice may be the scariest Agatha Christie adaptation yet. Or perhaps ever. The trailer definitely gives off more of a horror movie vibe than any other Agatha Christie movie, including the two most recent.

Which, if you’re wondering, yes. A Haunting in Venice is a follow-up to 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express and 2022’s Death on the Nile. Kenneth Branagh reprises his role as the very particular private detective Hercule Poirot, who confronts some hair-raising supernatural phenomena in this next case.

It’s based on Agatha Christie’s novel Hallowe’en Party, and it looks like a bunch of spooky fun judging from the trailer. And just like the book it’s based on, it’ll be out in time for Halloween.

Let’s unpack what it’s about, who’s in it, and when it’s coming out. The trailer is also included below for your viewing pleasure.

Synopsis

Here’s the synopsis from 20th Century Studios:

A Haunting in Venice is set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows’ Eve and is a terrifying mystery featuring the return of the celebrated sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world’s most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

  1. Looks fun. Nice of them to film one that hasn’t already been filmed before, so I’m looking forward to it.

  2. Author

AMEN, Maria! It looks familiar in one respect, but SO fresh in another. WAHOOO!!!!!

  3. I can’t remember if I’ve read this one or not… they start to blur together after a while. As for Poirot vs Marple, I always liked Marple better, but it’s a long standing argument in our family because my mother admired Poirot!

  4. Author

They do start to blur, don’t they, Vera? Good word choice! I thought I had read Hallowe’en Party but the trailer for the movie doesn’t look like the plot I remember in the book. The one I’m thinking of was bobbing for apples and a children’s costume party and then a murder. I’m going to have to go back and see if it’s the same book or not.

Also, I LOVE that there was a Team Poirot vs Team Marple thing in your family. I wish my mom and grandma were still alive. I know they read Christie but we never talked about which detective they liked better. Really cool you did!
