Can you still call yourself a cinephile if you never heard of a SteelBook before? I had no idea what that was until I learned that Lionsgate is releasing five horror SteelBooks. The Walmart exclusives will arrive on September 12 but are already available for pre-order. (Non-affiliate links are included below, and they include a discount!)
But first, let’s talk about SteelBooks. If you’re like me and don’t know what they are, here’s how Shout! Factory described them:
A SteelBook is a special release of a 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, or video game in a collectible steel case as opposed to the standard plastic. A genuine SteelBook is a premium metal case manufactured by Scanavo™.
They went on to say that there’s a special focus placed on the artwork. They explained, “SteelBooks provide a better canvas for displaying fantastic art because it can incorporate the spine and back as one cohesive visual.”
In the case of the horror SteelBooks from Lionsgate, the artwork was created by the artist Bond.
And as far as the featured titles, there’s one for SAW. (Perfect timing considering SAW X comes out September 29). It includes SAWs 1-8.
The other titles are Leprechaun 1-8, Rob Zombie Triple Feature (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, and 3 from Hell), Rob Zombie’s Halloween I & II Double Feature, and Blair Witch Project Double Feature.
Horror SteelBooks Synopsis
Here’s the official description from Lionsgate:
Celebrate the scariest time of year –Halloween– with a set of spine-tingling, hair-raising SteelBooks®! Lionsgate’s series of Walmart-exclusive Blu-rayTM + Digital multi-film SteelBooks®, inspired by the vivid, eye-catching artwork of vintage pulp novels, rises from the grave on September 12. Included in this collection are the terror-tinged The Blair Witch Project and its evil twin, Blair Witch; the reimagined Halloween I & II and unhinged Firefly trilogy (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, and 3 from Hell) from fright master Rob Zombie; and an 8-film round of repulsion care of SAW (including Jigsaw) and the devilish hijinks of the Leprechaun. It’s an endless SteelBook® scare-a-thon!

Check-In
Do you have a movie collection? If so, do you have any SteelBooks in it?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
