Psychic crystal ball with danger skull and crossbones warnings sign in it

“Who knew there were dangers of being psychic?” I remember thinking once upon a time while listening to a program on the now-defunct Paramania Radio. Psychics Vicki Johns and Leo Bonomo were discussing the downsides of their abilities.

Johns talked about people judging you, sometimes ostracizing you. It’s why she’d taken to calling herself a “spiritual adviser” rather than a psychic because it eased people’s minds and didn’t challenge their superstitions and preconceived notions.

Bonomo brought up health aspects, noting many psychics he knew had health issues and suffered from two ailments in particular: fibromyalgia and heart disease. Not only that, but many also seemed to have shorter life spans.  Another thing he noted was how many struggled with their weight, either being too heavy or too thin.

They then went on to discuss the importance of positivity and why they strive to surround themselves with as much of it as possible. Something they also advised their clients to do.

It was an interesting conversation that I’ve often thought of. I’ve even noticed some other dangers since then, such as diminished credibility, which I’ll get to.

However, I decided to pose the issue of the dangers of being psychic to some other psychics. Would anybody mention the same dangers that Johns and Bonomo had? Or would they offer different perspectives about the pitfalls of their abilities? Let’s find out.

Dangers of Being Psychic

1. Energy Issues

This one came up in some form in almost all of the replies, but three replies summed it up best.

Tara Tucci from @taratuccioffical on TikTok talked about how she has to prepare not just before reading for someone but also before going out in public. She used to come home drained or in a bad mood until she understood she was picking up other people’s energy.

“Energy vampires and energy transfer is real!” she said.

Now she protects herself by wearing a head covering and a black girdle around her solar plexus.

Jusstine K from PsychicGirl.com shared a similar sentiment.

“Psychic ability isn’t a game,” she stated. “It’s basically like having sex without a condom, I have to go into your energy to get specific answers for you and get out without taking your crap home with me.”

Medium Terri Jay from Terri Jay Cowgirl Shaman expressed that going out in public is probably the most negative aspect of her work.

“I am bombarded with information about people I see or feel around me,” she said. “I usually keep my head down and never make eye contact which prevents me from reading them.”

2. Effects on Mental and Physical Health

Sure enough, some addressed the dangers of being psychic on their mental and physical health, just as Johns and Bonomo had.

Angie Kuschel from Angie’s Spiritual Readings handles a lot of emotional trauma healing.

“I have been in this field for long enough to know that you have to displace all energy that you encounter that is unhealthy, dark, chaotic, or negative in any way,” she said. “The effects on your health can be exhaustion, physical pain, mental uncertainty.”

Nicole Starbuck had a little different take on it. Instead of suffering from absorbing the energies of others, she suffered from not acknowledging her abilities at first.

“I dismissed my intuitive hits for YEARS,” Starbuck said. “Ignoring my spiritual gifts led to severe anxiety, suicidal depression, and chronic illness because I wasn’t living in alignment with my life purpose.”

It all came to a head when she wound up in the emergency room suffering from a panic attack.

“This was the unfortunate result of repeatedly trying to force my soul into the box of the ‘American Dream,'” she said.

But it was a wake-up call to her soul, one that led her on the path of self-discovery and acceptance of her abilities.

“Now, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that psychic intuition is a gift from the Universe, and so-called ‘anxiety’ is a superpower, I’m on a mission to help other people discover and develop their spiritual gifts and abilities.”

3. Spiritual Repression

Starbuck alluded to something else in her response that was a danger that some of the other psychics also referenced: repressing her gifts. It ties in with the energy and mental and physical health issues but has to do more with spiritual well-being.

For instance, Starbuck grew up in a conservative Christian family that viewed psychic abilities as evil or witchcraft. She couldn’t properly embrace her gifts, which led to the decline in her physical health that landed her in the ER.

“Books, movies, and television show psychics, mediums, palm and Tarot card readers in both positive and negative light, depending upon how the media chooses to exploit them,” clairvoyant Davida Rappaport explained. “Very religious people, good Christians, and born-again Christians believe that Tarot cards as the devil’s tool and that anyone who does this type of work is in league with the devil, which is nonsense,” Rappaport said. “Ignorance breeds fear.”

All the psychics agreed that they understood the fear. In some cases, they even feared their own abilities. At first. But it all goes back to the energy aspect.

There are two types: light and dark. All psychics have to decide which to embrace. Most choose the light. But, of course, psychics are no different than anything else. You’re going to come across some rotten apples from time to time.

“There are a lot of people who do this work who are not true intuitives, do not have any abilities, and use scripts to frighten people since fear sells,” Medium Terri Jay said.

People like that create problems for those who not only want to help, but also believe in God themselves.

“You cannot do this work and be in ego since ego means, ‘Easing God Out,'” Jay said. “You must be in surrender —let go, let God.”

When that happens, psychics find happiness too. But being persecuted for their gifts and not being allowed to pursue them openly really does lead to a danger of spiritual suffocation since many connect with a higher source, whether they label that source God or not.

“My advice to anyone who is struggling with metaphysical abilities is to take time alone, to study, and clear out your energy,” Tsar Foiada from Golden Light Healing Crystals said. “Nature helps as well.”

4. Personal Dangers

Thankfully very few of the psychics who responded had ever encountered physical attacks because of who they are and what they do.

Rappaport mentioned that getting stalked or encountering physical violence does happen, though. Again, luckily it is rare.

5. Bad Reputation

However, in some cases, psychics face a different kind of aggression. Whether it’s a religious fanatic or someone who didn’t hear what they wanted to do during a reading, Rappaport explained some people “go to extremes” and seek to destroy reputations, relationships, and the livelihoods of psychics.

But so-called psychics (meaning those who really aren’t) also bring unwanted hurdles that make it harder for others to overcome stigmas attached to their abilities, especially if they use them to make money.

Medium Terri Jay explained why she doesn’t use the word “psychic” as a label.

“I prefer intuitive because all of us are intuitive, some just more than others. I also do not want to be associated with the bad rap that many psychics get for their unethical behavior.”

That sounded very much like Vicki Johns, who preferred to refer to herself not as a psychic but as a spiritual counselor to avoid the negative connotations “psychic” can evoke.

6. Loneliness

Whether you’re a psychic or not, relationships can be hard. But when you are a psychic, many reported relationships are that much harder.

“Single psychics often scare off potential partners,” Rappaport said, “because they think you can read their mind. (We don’t.)”

“Relationships can be very difficult,” Angela Kuschel said. “When you are in a constant state of healing and growth, it’s hard for your partner to keep up.”

“I feel as if I have this inner compass,” Tsar Foiada explained. “Unfortunately, this is not something you can share publicly or in close relations. So it does affect relationships, as you feel like you’re shutting people out from a part of yourself.”

7. Diminished Credibility

I mentioned at the start of the post that I noticed diminished credibility is a danger too. Just because you say you’re a psychic, or think you’re one, doesn’t mean people will automatically believe you —or even respect you. In fact, they may hold you to a higher standard and expect you to prove yourself.

The case of Christina Boyer in the documentary Demons & Saviors is a perfect example. As a teenager in the early 1980s, it appeared she was exhibiting telekinetic powers —until a video recording caught her faking it.

Fast forward to when she was a single mother in the early 1990s. Her daughter Amber died due to injuries she sustained at someone’s hands. Boyer was accused of murder, even though Amber’s injuries were likely inflicted before Boyer got home.

Even though Boyer’s past had nothing to do with her daughter’s death, it still came back to haunt her. For many, that was just further proof she wasn’t a good person. If she had lied before, she probably was now. Ultimately, it diminished her credibility.

  1. I remember in our old town a psychic got in legal trouble. It was all wrapped up in her business and local business laws. I think she was trying to operate as a service, but skeptics said she should be operating as an amusement. (Or something to that effect.)

Oh that’s a good hidden danger…laws! How interesting! Thanks for sharing that one, Vera!
