In the trailer for Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, the Liars get bad news. Since they were consumed with unmasking A before he killed them in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, their grades suffered. They can’t move on to junior year at Millwood High unless they complete summer school. Or, as they view it, “A fate worse than death.”
They quickly find out that’s not the case, though. They think A’s safely tucked away on death row—until a new A comes along. Like the one before, this new A is also a knife-wielding masked maniac.
Not that we get a good look at him (or possibly it will turn out to be a her) in the trailer. But we get enough of an idea that whoever it is favors a blood-red mask. And also has a romantic streak. In addition to leaving the Liars roses, A also presents each final girl with a demented note, which combines to give off The Bachelor meshed with any slasher movie vibes.
But who is A, and what beef does he/she have with the girls this time? The trailer reveals a big clue when the girls find something online that reads, “That’s A’s bad-to-the-bone mother, Bloody Rose Waters.” (FYI, the movies listed on the theater marquee also might be a clue of some sort.)
In Original Sin, A tormented the girls for sins their mothers committed when they were in high school that led to the death of Angela Waters. Rose was Angela’s mother. In Summer School, it seems the Liars are on a mission to find Rose. Will they find her and unmask A before it’s too late?
We’ll start getting answers when the first two episodes of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School premieres on Max on Thursday, May 9. The rest of the episodes will drop every week thereafter until June 20.

Did you know that along with Marlene King, who executive produced the original Pretty Little Liars, this Max Original series is created, written, and executive produced by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, both of whom brought the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to life? (Aguirre-Sacasa also worked on Riverdale.) I didn’t. And I love storing these little fun facts away. You never know when you might need them…
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
