With the demise of Travel Channel, we sure don’t see the release of ghost-hunting shows like we used to, do we? (That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some were getting pretty ridiculous.) However, in addition to Ghost Adventures, Discovery Channel is now the place to watch what once were other popular Travel Channel paranormal shows, including Expedition X and Expedition Bigfoot.

Although, in all fairness, Expedition X has always been a Discovery Channel show. And while it seeks “the truth behind the world’s eeriest supernatural mysteries,” Josh Gates will return to his Destination Truth roots when Expedition X premieres on Discovery Channel on August 14. (Destination Truth was a Travel Channel show.) The first episode explores the paranormal activity at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.

Expedition Bigfoot, which was a Travel Channel creation and which also premieres August 14, will once again search for the legendary beast the show is named for.

Teaser trailers recently dropped for both. Let’s take a look at those, as well as what’s in store for the upcoming seasons.

Expedition X

The series stays the same except for casting. The show bids farewell to paranormal researcher Jessica Chabot, who’s hosted along with Josh Gates and field biologist Phil Torres since it premiered in 2020. This season they welcome Heather Amaro to the team. She’s a third-generation paranormal researcher who has spent decades investigating mysterious phenomena.

In the first episode, Gates joins Torres and Amaro in West Virginia for a two-part investigation at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The sprawling abandoned psychiatric hospital has a tragic history that makes it a favorite for ghost hunters. What will happen during their two-part investigation? According to a press release, Gates, Torres, and Amaro “discover shocking secrets from the asylum’s sinister past and battle frightening forces beyond our understanding.” Some of which is teased in the trailer.

In this season of Expedition X, Torres and Amaro also do the following:

  • Tackle the depths of Scotland’s Loch Ness to examine new evidence of the legendary sea creature.
  • Hit the haunted streets of Savannah, Georgia, where they brazenly spend the night among hostile spirits.
  • Investigate frightening accounts of a mysterious seven-foot monster known as the skunk ape who prowls the Florida Everglades.
  • Go deep into the woods of Michigan to hunt for a blood-hungry beast that is believed to be part of a shocking government cover-up.

Expedition Bigfoot

Primatologist Dr. Mireya Mayor and Bigfoot experts Bryce Johnson and Russell Acord return to continue their hunt for the legendary cryptid. This season, they head back to a familiar hunting ground, the Lost Coast of Northern California, a.k.a. the epicenter of Bigfoot activity. But they’ll embark on their first-ever expedition to unearth evidence of the cryptid’s breeding ground.

How will they do that?

As they have in previous seasons, they’ll utilize advanced technology. They also believe they’ve located a nesting site. Will they track down a family of Bigfoots, or will one find them first?

Boo-k It!

Expedition X premieres at 9 pm ET/PT on August 14 on Discovery Channel. Expedition Bigfoot premieres right after it at 10 pm ET/PT.

  1. I thought the Bigfoot folks were going back to Alaska? Oh well. Alaska is pretty dangerous just on a normal day out in the bush country, so we’ll see, I guess.
I wouldn’t mind Travel Channel jettisoning all the paranormal programing if they would start airing real travel programs, like you can find with Rick Steves. I would love to see them air a series about the art and history you can explore all over, especially art. There is such an absolute dearth of art programs. I have to hunt on YouTube for art documentaries, usually on the Perspective channel.
It is interesting that Travel Channel keeps airing whole daylong repeats of the shows they canceled. It’s almost like they’re teasing all the paranormal fans.
Anyway, I blame David Zaslav. He’s ruining everything, including Warner Bros.

  2. I thought the Loch Ness monster was decidedly gone (extinct, a misidentification, whatever). I would be excited to see if there is evidence to the contrary!

Maybe they’ll start out in one place and then go back to Alaska? They didn’t release a whole lot of info about their show. There was more for Expedition X. And I keep checking TC’s lineup in the hopes I missed something. I’d like to see a return to more travel shows like you said and any with a focus on art would be interesting. I’m sure there are SO many angles that could be covered from. Glad you can find some of that on YouTube. That’s something I never would’ve known about, so thank you for sharing that perspective, Maria!

And my husband was NOT happy with Max the other day. He’s always looking for an excuse to cancel streamer memberships anyway, but he went there for the first time in a long time and he was like, “This is absolute shit. They really F’ed this up. I don’t want to watch any of this.”

    But he does. John Oliver.

And I’m a fan of a lot of the HBO shows. Not that they release a lot, but they seem to release something I like every couple of months so I always fight to keep it. lol

But my point is, when even he notices a change, yeah. Someone’s messed up bad.

I’m curious is the “new” find is actually the one in the Sahara Desert (? not sure I have that right) where they discovered plesiosaur remains and determined they were fresh-water dwelling, which means Nessie could have once called Loch Ness home. But we shall see… BUT, that was the episode that caught my eye too, Priscilla. lol

  5. Is Ronnie coming back on Expedition Bigfoot?

Oh, Paul, GREAT catch! I knew someone was missing from the press release, but got distracted and never checked it before posting. Just went to check and I guess he posted on X that he won’t be back this season! Ugh. Thank you for pointing that out. MUST write about that now because others will wonder too!
