Is Netflix’s Wednesday about to get competition for the Top 10 series spot, or maybe just some additional company? Wednesday has held strong with a Top 10 showing ever since it premiered on Nov. 23, 2022. However, The Irish Times recently shared its picks for the 10 best new shows to watch in January 2023. (On a variety of streamers, not just Netflix.) One of them was Lockwood & Co.
I’d either heard something about the others or wasn’t interested in them at all. But what was Lockwood & Co. about?
My ignorance was quickly remedied when I learned about the popular young adult supernatural thriller series of books of the same name by Jonathan Stroud that it’s based on. But after watching the teaser trailer for the new Netflix series, I only had one question: It’s going to be on U.S. Netflix, right?
Hey, my concern was justifiable. After all, it was The Irish Times I read about it in. It could’ve been a U.K. Netflix-only release for all I knew. Luckily it’s not!
Let’s take a look at the Goodreads Choice series of books that inspired the new Netflix series. Which looks a bit like Ghostbusters, but with teens, swords, and British accents.
The Lockwood & Co. Book Series
The series follows Lucy Carlyle, Anthony Lockwood, and George Cubbins, operatives of a psychic detective agency in London who battle ghosts, a.k.a. “Visitors,” in London, England.
There are five books in the series, starting with The Screaming Staircase, which was published in 2013. It ended with The Empty Grave, which was published in 2017. The other books include The Whispering Skull, The Hollow Boy, and The Creeping Shadow.
Lockwood & Co. Netflix Synopsis
The Netflix series definitely resembles the books. Here’s the synopsis that accompanied the teaser trailer:
A girl with extraordinary psychic abilities joins two gifted teen boys at a small ghost-hunting agency to fight the many deadly spirits haunting London.
Lockwood & Co. Release Date
The eight-episode series starts streaming on Netflix on Jan. 27, 2023.

Were you familiar with the Lockwood & Co. book series? If so, was it because you read them? If not, after seeing the trailer, are you curious to watch the series too? (And maybe even read the books?)
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
I’ve heard of both The Whispering Skull and The Hollow Boy, but I didn’t know they were part of a series and especially didn’t know they were coming to Netflix. Cool!
I’m glad you commented because I *almost* went to search your site to see if you’d done one of your one-sentence reviews for any of these books. lol
