Ever since their clever Overlook commercial during the Academy Awards in 2018, I’ve watched the Academy Museum’s progress with interest. (Sadly, the phone number they used for the ad is no longer in service. Too bad they didn’t work with the Doctor Sleep release to revive that number somehow.)

Anyway, the 300,000 square foot museum will allow visitors to “go inside the movies.” It will celebrate “the art and science of movies” and “offer a glimpse behind the screen, illuminating the creative and collaborative process of filmmaking.”

There’s so much that goes into movie making, isn’t there? From the writers to the sets, lighting, sound, casting, directing, and, of course, costumes.

They’re acquiring artifacts of all kinds to represent all facets of the process. Around Halloween they announced they’ve now added Bela Lugosi’s Dracula cape to their collection. Here’s what was in the newsletter announcement:

“After several years of discussions with Founding Director Kerry Brougher, who showed such care and appreciation of its important role in film history, it became clear that there is no better home for the cape than the Academy Museum, allowing movie lovers to view a piece of classic horror film history and enjoy Bela Lugosi’s acclaimed performance for years to come,” said Bela G. Lugosi, son of the iconic actor.

Three Fun Facts About Dracula‘s Cape

  1. Bela Lugosi owned the cape.
  2. Following the success of the 1931 film, he wore it on stage and during personal appearances.
  3. It’s been in the Lugosi family for over 80 years.
