April: A Cursed Month?

What is it with April? I’ve shared my theory here before (we’ll get to those links later) that I believe it’s a cursed month. It’s been a while since I went there though.

But every April I can’t help but wonder, “What, when, where, and how will disaster strike this time?”

Tragic Events Research

Don’t get me wrong. I know tragedies strike every month.

In fact, I’ve often thought of researching major tragic events and seeing which months have the most. Just to see where April really falls. (I’m thinking August, September and December could give it a run for its money.)

I’d also like to track astrological events, like retrogrades and such (especially Mercury retrogrades), to see how often they’re at play when tragedies happen.

Good Old Mercury Retrograde

I haven’t done the research to verify this yet, but Mercury Retrograde seems to happen at some point during most Aprils.

Could that have an impact on why so many tragic events seem to happen during them?

Are you’re wondering, What is Mercury Retrograde and what does it have to do with anything?

For those unfamiliar with MR, in a nutshell: some planets have times when they appear to be moving backwards. They’re not, but the phenomenon is dubbed “retrograde motion.”

When Mercury, the Messenger Planet, goes retrograde, prepare for delays, miscommunication, breakdowns, etc.

Mercury Retrograde is not “bad,” per se, but it definitely can feel that way. It gives our patience a workout and is a good time to do any “re” activities, such as: REst, REpairs, RElaxation, REevaluations, REstorations, etc.

But because it can be such a volatile time, could it influence events?

Not sure…

The Tragedies

My first post about my Cursed April Theory was on April 6, 2010: “April, Saturn, & Mercury Retrograde: Something Wicked This Way Comes.”

Oh boy did that get a lot of people riled up.

Many took offense that I was saying, “If it happens in April (no matter what ‘it’ is), it’s bad.” (Which some took to mean birthdays, anniversaries, etc.)

No! That was not my intention at all.

I was just pointing out some of the major tragedies with April dates, like:

  • April 18, 1906: The Great San Francisco Earthquake
  • April 14, 1912: Titanic
  • April 26, 1986: Chernobyl
  • April 19, 1993: The Waco Siege  (Ended on this date; started in February though)
  • April 19, 1995: Oklahoma City Bombing
  • April 20, 1999: Columbine Massacre
  • April 16, 2007: Virginia Tech shootings

And that’s just to name a few!

In addition to being offended by my initial 2010 post, a lot of people thought I was fishing for cursed April/Mercury Retrograde connections.

Who knows? Maybe I am trying to force a pattern where there’s none. (Interestingly though, I’m not the only one.  Google “is April cursed” and see what you come back with. I certainly wasn’t the first to notice it.)

But after that April 6, 2010 post, while Mercury Retrograde was in full swing, more April mayhem followed:

  • April 14, 2010: Eyjafjallajökull, a volcano in Iceland, erupted. Its ash cloud disrupted air travel for days.
  • April 20, 2010: BP Oil Spill (which has since been rebranded –er, I mean renamed–the “Deepwater Horizon oil spill”)

On March 31, 2011, I followed up with “Madame Mroch’s Prognostications: Brace Yourself, April is Upon Us.”

Mercury was going retrograde again, and I couldn’t help myself. I had to note what had happened after my post the year before.

Additional April Tragedies

Since my 2011 post, here’s a few other tragic April events that have occurred:

  • April 25-28, 2011: Tornado Super Outbreak
  • April 15, 2013: Boston Marathon Bombing
  • April 17, 2013: West Fertilizer Plant Explosion
  • April 25, 2015: Nepal Earthquake
April: A Cursed Month? Short Film

I decided to make a short film about all of this.

A lot of the above tragic events are included, but not all.

There are others that are in the film that are not listed above.

Take a look and see what you think. Do you believe April may be more cursed than other months too?

Mercury Retrograde Dates

On Sunday Mercury went Retrograde. Lots of astrology-related sites list Mercury Retrograde dates, but I took these 2017 dates from the Old Farmer’s Almanac site:

  • January 1 to 9
  • April 9 to May 3
  • August 13 to September 5
  • December 3 to 23

Figured I’d share so you’d have them, just in case you’re interested.
