You may have seen the “I’m so happy I’m next in line at Wal-Mart” dancing skeleton video at some point. It’s been around for several years and always seems to resurface on social media every Halloween. Here’s a video I found of it on YouTube:
That dancing skeleton comes from an app that was my fave for a while: FX Guru. I’ve used it to bring Skellie to life in all sorts of places, from the pool to the park to hotel hallways.
Here are some of the dancing skeleton videos I’ve shared on HJ’s Facebook page over the years:

Dancing Skeleton Pops Out of Coffin at the Park

For at least the past two Halloweens I thought it would be fun to learn how to do the dancing skeleton dance. I also thought it’d be fun if others got in on the act and learned how to do it too. Then we could all do it together!
Whenever Halloween season rolls around, though (which seems the most logical time to do it), I’m always too busy juggling other projects to learn the moves or put together a dance training video, though. (The smart thing would’ve been to work on it ahead of time, but I’m a Master Procrastinator so…yeah.)
But this year, thanks to the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis, I got a bright idea.
Why not do it for April Fool’s Day? Make it an online flash mob. That way we can do it “together,” even if only virtually, while still maintaining safe social distancing.
So, with a little help from my husband (who is both a bigger ham than I am and a better dancer…sort of, you’ll see what I mean), I broke down the dancing skeleton dance into easy to follow steps.
Sound fun? Here’s how to learn the dance and join the flash mob on April Fool’s Day!
The Dancing Skeleton Challenge
It’s really pretty easy. Here’s all you have to do to participate:
- Learn it.
- Record it.
- Post it. #DancingSkeletonChallenge
Get creative. Dress up. (Maybe do your dance while you’re dressed up for Quarantine-o-ween?) Most importantly, have fun!
The Dance
The dance itself isn’t very long. Maybe 30 seconds.
I broke it down into five easy-to-learn segments.
1. Strut, Split and Spin
2. The Lasso Move
3. The Pulls
4. The Shake It but Don’t Break It
5. The March, Slide and Bow Finale –which really should be the March, Slide, Shimmy and Bow Finale
Each move is demonstrated in this easy to follow video.
As you’ll see, my hub doesn’t replicate the moves exactly. (He’s an accountant for goodness sake, not a dance instructor so I was lucky to recruit him for this nonsense at all!)
He did his best, though, and had some laughs in the process. And that’s what it’s all about: a little bit of silliness during a time that’s become a bit stressful.
So what do you say? Ready to leave some coronavirus concerns behind for a little while and boogie?
Let’s see you shake your groove thing! Accept the Dancing Skeleton Challenge…or at least pass it on to those you think might get a kick out of this.
Remember to use the hashtag: #DancingSkeletonChallenge.
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
