Edited August 25, 2019
I told you the Caption It Contests were coming back. (For a limited time.) Staying true to my word, here’s the first one.
But first…
Changes
I used to do these a few years ago. Except they were called “Caption This.” (Close enough, right? Same difference.)
Anyway, people who were here back then have often said since, “I sure miss the Caption This contests. I wish you would bring them back.”
So I am…but with a twist. (I’ll cover that in the “How to Play” section below.) Basically, I’m not going to be the only one deciding who wins.
Also, I’m not using stock photos this go around. I have enough crazy ones of the Skeleton Crew’s shenanigans –and other things. But primarily skeletons. So expect the majority of photos to include one of more of the Crew members.
Prize options are a little different than they used to be too.
So how do you play –and win?
Read on…
How to Play
- Look at the photo below.
- Use the comment section to caption it.
- You can caption it on our Facebook or Instagram posts too. (Since this is the first time we’re doing it, we’re going to experiment with embedding social media posts here and see if that makes it easier for you to comment on them also if you so choose.)
- Decide which prize you’d like if you win. (Yes! There are not only prizes, but you get to pick which one appeals to you most!) You can tell me with your Caption It comment, or wait and see if you win to tell me.
- Newsletter subscribers: be sure to identify yourself. (If you’re not one, #4 under the “Rules” section explains why you might want to become one.)
**Note: After I posted this and shared on social media, etc., I realized something: I can’t resist the Emoji responses. Almost always when people post comments, I have to react with at least a thumbs up. But seeing some of the Facebook captions so far…well, if you’re at all worried about this “voting” process, just know you’re going to get at one like from me. Whether you leave a comment here, on Facebook, or on Insta.
How to Win
There are several opportunities for you to win this go around.
- Your caption on the post gets the most likes.
- You caption on any of the social media posts gets the most likes.
- The Skeleton Crew picks your caption regardless of how many likes you do or don’t have because it tickled us so much.
Prizes
If you win, you’ll have your pick from any of the following:
- $10 Amazon card*
- T-shirts (Three styles to choose from: 1. Haunt Jaunts “It’s a Skulltural Thing,” 2. “Skeleton Crew,” or 3. “Cages.)
- LED Beanies (Two styles to choose from: 1. Plain Black or 2. Skull and Crossbones.)
- Notebooks (Blank inside. Two cover options to choose from: 1. “Hearts are wild creatures. That’s why our ribs are cages.” or 2. “Haunt Jaunts. It’s a Skulltural Thing.”)
- 8 GB USB
*This prize is open to everyone, but it is the only choice I can offer to non-U.S. residents.
Deadline
Entries will be accepted until August 31, 2019.
Winner(s)
The winner(s) will be announced sometime the first week of September. (Vague, I know. Every time I set a date, I seem to miss it. Maybe this way I won’t disappoint or frustrate anyone –including myself!)
Rules
- Open to everybody regardless of where you live, however the only prize I can offer winning non-U.S. residents is the Amazon gift card.
- If two or more caption submissions are very similar, I’ll draw names from the Boo Bucket to determine a winner.
- Multiple entries accepted. (If you’re gifted enough to come up with more than one caption, feel free to submit them. Just be sure we know they’re separate entries and not a giant run-on one.)
- Newsletters subscribers will get to choose TWO prizes if their caption is picked. Not a subscriber yet? Remedy that by signing up here.
FAQs
Are multiple submissions accepted?
Yes. See #3 above under Rules.
Does my caption have to be a quote?
Nope. You can give the photo a title, write a poem, make it a quote as if someone’s saying something, write a flash story (100 words or less)…anything goes. Whatever the photo inspires from you, we’ll take!
Can I share/tag my friends in social media to get more likes on my caption submission?
Absolutely!
Ready?

Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
“Don’t bother me now—I’m on my last leg of the race!
Jeepers Skellie, we forgot the sunblock — We’ve been fried!
Lefty skeleton “Wow! You’ve lost so much weight! You look amazing!”
Right bones “I lost 2 of my limbs, ya idiot!”
Apparently it didn’t matter that Frankie had a leg up on the competition.
