Witch woman in black holding crystals

An article in Coast to Coast caught my eye, as they often do, because of the clever headline: “Golf-Loving Witch Has Sage Advice for Masters Tournament Players.” I don’t know what tickled me more:

  1. The thought of a “golf-loving witch,” which of course invoked images of a witch flying around on a golf club instead of a broomstick, or
  2. The clever play on words with “sage” advice, since sage is a witch tool-of-the-trade.

The next intriguing part of the article was this sentence: “Setting up shop directly across the street from the Masters Championship her city hosts each year, Amanda Wicklum, known as Augusta’s ‘official witch,’ is ready to assist players with the supernatural sports medicine she stocks at her Curiosity Cottage.”

Wait, what? August, Georgia, has an official witch?

I had to learn more about that. Here’s what I found out.

About Augusta’s Official Witch

I found an article on NJ.com about the “wicked cool” witch of Augusta. (I thought “wicked” was a Massachusetts thing, not a New Jersey one? It doesn’t really matter. Points to NJ for putting the adjective to good use.)

I’m not sure the city of Augusta has officially recognized Wicklum as their official witch, but Lenore Darkbloom, who is The Curiosity Cottage’s social media director/spiritual medium, has definitely bestowed that moniker on Wicklum.

And in case you’re wondering about Darkbloom’s name, the NJ.com article answered that too: “…yes, that’s her witch name…”

According to Darkbloom, Wicklum grew up in a neighborhood close to where the Augusta National Masters golf tournament is played every year. Which is handy because she turned out to be crazy for golf and has attended the Masters every year since she was 10.

Is that why she set up shop across from where the Masters is held? Yes! Let’s examine her store next.

Wicklum only recently opened her shop, The Curiosity Cottage, last year. In fact, due to interest and demand, she’s already moved from her first location to the one she’s now at, which is across the street from where the Masters is held.

It invites visitors to “stop in for a spell,” which is also such a fun witchy spin on southern hospitality. The Cottage touts itself as being “Augusta’s largest witch store,” and provides a place for witches from Augusta’s six covens to not only shop but also to meet up.

In addition to selling crystals, candles, books, tarot cards, decor, and a variety of other metaphysically pleasing things, the Curiosity Cottage also hosts Merry Meets and will host a Conjure Fest on November 6. Which, yep, I added to the Paracons and Horror Fests page. In fact, it’s the first and so far only one we’ve got listed this year. (Thanks, Covid.)

Both Wicklum and Darkbloom sound amazing, and so does their shop. If I ever jaunt through Augusta, I’ll be sure to stop in for a spell.

However, I’d love to have either or the both of them as guests on the podcast/videocast, so I’m going to share this post with them and see if they’d be up for joining me.
