I recently received an email from CrimeCon about the Citizen Sleuth Academy. It’s an upcoming crimeHQ workshop that’s taking place on Wednesday, January 12.

It sounded really cool. Here was the description:

During The Citizen Sleuth Academy workshop event, you will learn and practice Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) from one of the leading experts in cyber intelligence!

Crowd sourcing can be a valuable tool in investigations when it comes to cold cases, unsolved murders and missing person’s cases, but do you know how to use the Internet to the fullest when it comes to gathering public information? Joe Gray, Founder and Principal Instructor at The OSINTion, will teach you the foundations of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and how to use it responsibly when looking into true crime cases.

But what was crimeHQ? Or the Citizen Sleuth Academy for that matter? There’s really a place you can learn tactics for becoming a better armchair detective?

All of that sounded appealing and I figured if I clicked the “RSVP Now” button in the email it may lead to some answers. Yep. Here’s what I found out.

  1. I would be totally obsessed with true crime if it weren’t so sad to think about what the victims went through and their loved ones continue to go through.
