Curious Events Day: What Is It, When Is It, and What Does It Celebrate?

A giant octopus tentacle wrapped around a log cabin would qualify as a curious event in my book. What about yours?

One of the observances on the Weird Holidays & Observances page that has always intrigued me is Curious Events Day. A few years ago I shared nine curious photos to celebrate the day. I admitted,  “I’m not exactly sure what Curious Events Day is.” And then I wondered, “Who created it? What curious events does the day pay tribute to? What are the greatest curious events that have ever happened?”

I’ve decided today’s the day to explore some of that.

What is Curious Events Day?

I think TimeandDate.com sums it up best so I’ll share how they phrased it:

Love conspiracy theories? Enjoy pondering about bizarre events that seem to have no explanations? Then Curious Events Day, a made-up holiday celebrated every year on October 9, is just the holiday you need to celebrate!

When is Curious Events Day?

As noted above in the “What is…” section, Curious Events Day falls on October 9 every year.

Who created Curious Events Day?

Well, that’s the curious thing. Nobody knows. Its origins are shrouded in mystery, just like the great mysteries the day observes. (Sort of fitting, right?)

What qualifies as a curious event?

I guess anything mysterious and unexplainable qualifies as a curious event really. They don’t have to be paranormal or supernatural, though. It seems conspiracy theories and unsolved mysteries of any kind qualify. As long as it’s curious and leaves you questioning something, it’s curious.

But of course, the more paranormal curiosities are the ones that pique my interest most, such as:

  1. Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster: Do they really exist or are they hoaxes people refuse to stop believing in?
  2. Mothman: Is there such a creature or being and is he really an omen of doom?
  3. The Den Files: I grew up in Denver, but had moved away by the time the new airport, DIA, was built. However, all my family still lived there so I’ve been through DIA a lot. My mom even took a post-retirement job there for a bit. The first time I heard of the Den Files and the Illuminati conspiracy theories about the airport, I was like, “What? Seriously?” I still feel that way, but I love that DIA has embraced it, and I especially love that one of the ways they’ve done that is with Greg the Talking Gargoyle.
  4. Stonehenge: What are those stones all about?
  5. Crop Circles: With all of our technology these days, will someone finally have a camera set up on a field where a crop circle happens? Will we ever finally get the answer whether it’s otherworldly, alien, or hoax? This one seems solvable and I find it curious that we haven’t yet.

  1. I think crop circles (that show up in snow, too) are the most curious events ever. But I’ve never seen one in person, only in photos. I don’t think they’re a hoax (WAY too much time and effort to do something so elaborate and precise), but that doesn’t mean I think they are supernatural, either. Maybe they are a natural phenomenon that science simply hasn’t figured out yet.

    Then again, could be aliens.:-)

This is why crop circles intrigue me so much too, Priscilla! I know some have been hoaxed, BUT…so many they can’t explain. What is up with them? I hope we find out one day!
