Have you seen the video of Duggie the dolphin swimming with Ben the labrador in a harbor on Tory Island, a small island in Ireland?

Some might call such a spectacle paranormal. I mean, it’s not very normal for most dogs to rush out into the water and swim around happily with a dolphin.

But starting in 2006, when the young male dolphin who islanders named Duggie first appeared, that’s what happened. Ben apparently took right to him, and Duggie seemed to like his company. It was not an uncommon sight to see them swimming together most days in Middletown Harbor.

OH NO! WHERE DID DUGGIE GO?

There were several clips of Duggie and Ben on YouTube, but on the one posted below I read some news in the comments that made me sad: Duggie hasn’t been seen in the harbor since 2008.

There’s no mention of Ben or whether he misses his buddy. I wonder if he still keeps an eye out for his playmate?

Most importantly, I wonder what ever happened to Duggie? And in that way that dogs sometime have, does Ben understand instinctively what happened to Duggie? Did he know the last time they swam together he’d never see his dolphin pal again?

I’m glad people caught this phenomenon on film, though. It might not be exactly paranormal, but it’s certainly not normal. It is, however, extremely heart-warming.

  1. Awww, how sweet. I hope Duggie is alright and makes another appearance so his old friend can swim with him once more.

Me too, Julie! I keep thinking of poor Ben. From the videos it seems he just loved swimming with Duggie so much. And I just hope Duggie is okay! Maybe he met a girl and they’re making Duggie Jrs and that fellow will return to the harbor!
