What comes to mind when you think of Kentucky? Horses and the Derby? Bourbon? Baseball? What about a great place to explore the outdoors? Or, in the case of the Gorge Underground, explore Mother Nature’s indoors.
Among other things, Kentucky is cave country. You can take a guided tour of the Diamond Caverns, which is near Mammoth Cave National Park, the world’s longest known cave system. Close to Louisville, you’ll find the manmade Mega Caverns where you can zipline underground, take a tram tour, or do a ropes course in the old limestone mine.
Speaking of mine caves, just east of Lexington you’ll find the Red River Gorge. It’s actually also a popular destination for mountain climbers because of its rock formations, which include a lot of arches. Only Arches National Park in Utah has more.
But Red River Gorge is also home to the Gorge Underground, where you can tour the 100-year old abandoned limestone mine cave in a kayak or on a cave boat tour.
Side note: You can also take a short boat tour of another Kentucky cave at the Lost River Cave near Bowling Green. It’s technically Kentucky’s only natural cave boat tour because the Gorge Underground was once a mine.
Anyway, for Spooky Season 2021, 99.5 WKDQ reported the Gorge Underground is bringing back its Haunted Boat Tour.
According to posts on the Gorge Underground’s Facebook page, the tour takes place on both the water and on foot.
The voyage will take place during the month of October.
Tickets for the Haunted Mine Tour cost $75 per person.
