St. Augustine visitors traditionally pack the pedestrian-friendly streets of downtown during the day, soaking up historic landmarks amid art galleries, restaurants and shops galore. But while there’s plenty to do in the daylight, the nation’s oldest city has a sleepy reputation after the sun goes down.

But don’t be fooled. For those who know where to look, some entertaining doors remain open way past bedtime. At the top of St. Augustine’s after-dark to-do list: ghost hunting.

There are ghost tours with pirates in costume as guides. Others include a chauffeur-driven hearse to haunted sites and a Ripley’s Believe It or Not ghost train adventure. There’s even a haunted pub crawl for those who like to mix spirits with spirits.

Some feared if a buyer wasn’t found soon for the building that had been damaged by a January 2015 fire, demolition might be the only recourse.

There is, indeed an event scheduled in connection with that building on April 7 — and it has nothing to do with demolition. Rowana Ray, who purchased the building in September, will host an open house at the recently renovated structure.

“I’m naming it the Para Cafe,” Ray said in a recent interview with The News-Gazette. “I have a lot of paranormal people who want to come and speak and also check the place out. I’ve had things happen here that I can’t explain.”

Stateroom B340, which has reported paranormal activity for years, can be rented out starting at $499 a night beginning Friday, April 13.

A GENIE could be living in a house in Rawmarsh, according to a paranormal researcher.

Lee Steer, a member of paranormal group Project Reveal, said the genie – or djinn – may inhabit a special sacred container which has just been added to their collection of weird and spooky objects.

Group members believe they have detected hotspots in the old object and think it may have moved of its own accord and tried to communicate with them.
