The two-hour special, The Freeway Killer: Lost Murder Tapes, was among the titles highlighted in information about the new specials, series, and seasons premiering on ID this October. We didn’t know much about it aside from the fact that it would premiere on ID on Sunday, October 23 at 9/8c and would be available to stream the same day on discovery+.
We also had a general idea of what it was about from the brief description released at that time:
“In 1970s California, a serial killer dumps young boys’ bodies along the freeways. An L.A. street reporter on the case receives information that embroils him in the dilemma of a lifetime. Decades later, lost confession tapes help experts uncover the truth.”
However, ID recently released a few more tidbits, including cover art, a little longer description, and a trailer.
The trailer is super chilling and revealing. “These recordings have never been heard before…until now.”
The Freeway Killer was a prolific serial killer who confessed to 21 murders. On the tapes in the trailer, he very matter-of-factly describes brutally stabbing innocent people. Which is bad enough, but it gets worse. The trailer ends with him confessing, “I know a couple of times to make sure somebody was dead I would scratch the eyeball with the knife.”
What? That’s beyond sick. That’s totally demented. The stuff of horror movies and nightmares. But his crimes were very real, not fiction.
Which makes one first-person account that much more poignant. I don’t know who the man is because the trailer doesn’t identify him. However, I’m guessing he’s law enforcement who worked on the case. He says, “These tapes were meant to be confidential. They were never meant to be released.”
After hearing just the little that the trailer reveals, I see why. But check it out for yourself and see what you think.
The Freeway Killer: Lost Murder Tapes Description
In the Summer of 1979, bodies of young boys started showing up raped, mutilated, and dumped along California’s freeways. Most of the victims were hitchhikers. Some are young gay men, arriving in Los Angeles to join the budding activist movements of the time. Without today’s DNA technology, investigators raced tirelessly to find a suspect as the bodies piled up. Alongside them was LA street reporter Dave Lopez, whose involvement in the case leads him to face the dilemma of a lifetime. Four decades later, the lost confession tapes allow psychologists to analyze the mind of this sick serial killer.

Check-In
So? What did you think about the trailer? As far as these sorts of true crime docs go, does it look like another good one to you too?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
Whoa, that’s a chilling trailer. OMGosh!
