It’s been a while since I did a Movie Monday post about horror movies coming soon to theaters. Maybe because I get inspired to write such posts after seeing trailers for some. However, I haven’t been to the movies lately.
But I got to wondering about what kind of horror movies 2014 might have to offer. I decided to use Fandango to see what I could find. Below are the results.
It’s not a complete list of horror movies for 2014, but it hits the ones opening in the next few months. Do any pique your interest? (Patrick: Evil Awakens, Oculus, and The Quiet Ones are the ones I’m most curious about so far.)
DARK HOUSE – Opens Friday March 14, 2013
DARK HOUSE is a thrilling and horrifying road trip, full of twists and brutal surprises; a suspenseful thriller about a young man and a chilling old house that has survived decades, awaiting the return of its prodigal son… a house that can escalate Nick’s gift to see death before it happens, but holds within its walls the origins of a dark family legacy so horrible it may have already reached out to Nick’s unborn child.
PATRICK: EVIL AWAKENS – Opens Friday March 14, 2013
When a young nurse begins work at an isolated psychiatric ward, she quickly becomes fascinated with Patrick, a brain dead patient who is the subject of a mad scientist’s cruel and unusual experiments. What starts as an innocent fascination quickly takes a sinister turn as Patrick begins to use his psychic powers to manipulate her every move, and send her life into a terrifying spiral out of control.
OCULUS – Opens April 11, 2014
Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again…
A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 – Opens April 18, 2014
Crossing new lines and breaking old barriers, A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 is the sequel to the hilarious box-office hit starring Marlon Wayans as Malcolm who, after exorcising the demons of his ex, is starting fresh with his new girlfriend and her two children. After moving into their dream home, Malcolm is once again plagued by bizarre paranormal events. With spine-tingling tension and hilarious punch-lines A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 is inspired by the latest supernatural horror movie franchises and shows that this time… it’s not just the house that’s haunted!
Author’s Note: Okay, so this isn’t a true horror movie –but I think it’s scary they made a second one nonetheless. I had such high hopes for the first one. The trailer had me LOLing like mad. But they showed the best parts in the trailer. This was one of the worst spoofs ever! IMO
THE QUIET ONES – Opens April 25, 2014
A university student (Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and some classmates are recruited to carry out a private experiment — to create a poltergeist. Their subject: an alluring, but dangerously disturbed young woman (Olivia Cooke of Bates Motel). Their quest: to explore the dark energy that her damaged psyche might manifest. As the experiment unravels along with their sanity, the rogue PHD students are soon confronted with a terrifying reality: they have triggered an unspeakable force with a power beyond all explanation. Inspired by true events, The Quiet Ones is directed by John Pogue from a screenplay by Craig Rosenberg and Oren Moverman and John Pogue, and based on a screenplay by Tom de Ville.
DELIVER US FROM EVIL – Opens July 2, 2014
In DELIVER US FROM EVIL, New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city. Based upon the book, which details Sarchie’s bone-chilling real-life cases.
Author’s Note: Fandango didn’t have a movie poster or trailer up for this movie yet, but it’s genre was listed as Supernatural Horror, Horror so I made sure to include it.
THE PURGE: ANARCHY – Opens July 18, 2014
The New Founders of America invite you to celebrate your annual right to Purge in THE PURGE: ANARCHY. Returning alongside writer/director/producer James DeMonaco to produce the sequel to 2013’s sleeper hit are Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series), alongside Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers) and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay (Pain & Gain, Transformers franchise), Brad Fuller (The Amityville Horror, A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Andrew Form (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th).
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
I do not like scary movies, but out of loyalty to another blogger, I read this entire post and now I am too afraid to go to bed. Do I need an exorcism?
Oh no, Suzanne!!! I sure thank you for enduring possible nightmares just out of loyalty. I hope you don’t need an exorcism! I do appreciate the comment tho!
Thanks so much for posting these. The only one I knew about was the movie with Eric Bana – these all look really good! Can’t say I’m a fan of “The Purge” so I’ll be skipping that one but will definitely be dragging my paranormally skeptic husband to see the rest – LOL!
LOL…I’m glad this was useful, Spookygirl! Was the Purge bad? I’ve been curious about it but haven’t seen it yet. In my Netflix queue.
