This year the moon landing, Sesame Street and a host of other things turn 50. If you’re a part of the group that turns 50 in 2019, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll celebrate.

Turning another year older is downright scary to some people, but by throwing the perfect spooky celebration, you’ll be scared by something bigger than your age. From turning the venue into a haunted house to learning how to create creepy cocktails, it’s pretty easy to throw a haunted bash without summoning the spirits for help.

Decide on a Theme

While the typical “over the hill” 50th birthday party decorations actually fit decently well within a spooky theme, they’re pretty outdated. Instead, opt for a theme that is spooky yet focused on the haunted interests of the birthday honoree.

Insane asylum and evil carnival themes are both great ways to incorporate a spooky vibe without reminding the birthday guest of just how old they’re getting. However, if the birthday boy or girl really does enjoy poking fun at themselves, you can definitely incorporate a haunted graveyard theme into any 50th birthday bash. The cake, for example, can be in the shape of a headstone that is dedicated to the loving memory of their youth, and the backyard can be turned into an elegant yet creepy graveyard where you serve the birthday dinner among fog and headstones.

Get Creative with Decorations

Remember that it’s not a Halloween party. Regarding the decorations, you’ll want to avoid things that scream pumpkin patch and costume party.

Instead, get creative in different ways, like renting out a photo booth for the party and including a haunted ghost that appears in each of the photos.

Or, you can turn the spooky event into an elegant murder mystery affair complete with sound effects, real clues, and a nine-course meal. Not only is this a great way to tie in a haunted, creepy theme with the big event, but you’ll be able to provide your guests, and the person of honor, with a great evening filled with good food and quality entertainment.

Visit a Haunted House

If turning 50 has you feeling a little too close to the other side of life than you’d like, there’s no better way to make you feel alive than to get your adrenaline and heart racing at a haunted house. If you live in an area that doesn’t have year-round haunted houses, try “boo-king” your own weekend travel trip to a nearby haunted hotel or hotspot and having your own ghost hunting adventure with friends.

Enjoy the Special Day

Turning 50 really is the new 30, which means that it doesn’t have to be scary. The celebration, however, should be downright spooky, complete with creepy cocktails and hauntingly divine decorations. However you choose to throw a spooky birthday celebration, it’s important to remember to enjoy the special day. You’ll want to look back on this mortal moment with fondness one day when you’ve finally passed over into the ghost realm.
