Do you like visiting charming lighthouses? What about haunted ones? Have you ever wanted to stay in a charming, haunted lighthouse? Then you’ll want to read on to find out about the Discovery Experience at Haig Point.

Daufuskie Island Getaway

If you’re looking for a place to indulge in some coastal R&R while partaking in a hefty dose of Vitamin Sea, Haig Point on Daufuskie Island sounds like a winner. It’s located between Savannah and Hilton Head. It’s South Carolina’s southernmost Sea Island. Haig Point lies at the island’s northern tip.

It’s a 25-minute ferry ride from Hilton Head to get there. Gas-powered cars are prohibited. People get around by electric golf carts. (To me, this sounds amazing. I can only imagine how peaceful it must be. And quiet. It would really allow you to appreciate the ocean’s melody.)

In addition to peace and quite, you’ll find history, culture and an art scene on the island.

However, there are no hotels there. You either have to be a Haig Point resident to stay there, or a guest of a member. At least, that’s the only way you used to be able to stay there…

The Strachan Mansion and 1873 Lighthouse

Haig Point now offers a Discovery Experience that offers you a three day two-night weekend getaway where you’ll stay in either the Strachan Mansion or the 1873 Lighthouse, depending on availability.

The mansion is gorgeous. It offers four suites, a bar, a billiards room and cozy places to unwind.

The mansion is really Haig Point’s “Member hub,” because it’s where the General Store and the on-site post office is. It’s also a Wi-Fi hot spot, and complimentary coffee, muffins and newspapers are available to members each morning.

The lighthouse also serves as a guest house (when it’s not being utilized as a wedding and special event venue). It doesn’t get much more charming than this. Two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and porch with a water view.

And there’s also a ghost…

The Lighthouse’s Ghost

Haig Point embraces their ghost. Here’s the story they tell of Maggie on the mansion and lighthouse page:

As the legend goes, a young maiden named Maggie lived in the Lighthouse with her family in the late 19th century.  Her father, Patrick Comer, was the first lighthouse keeper, along with his wife, Bridget.  The family moved to Daufuskie in 1873 and tended to the structure for the first 18 years. Maggie fell in love with a naval engineer who was tasked with refitting the Lighthouse’s lantern room.  Notes from his diary revealed that the pair had quickly fallen in love, but something happened unexpectedly and the couple split.  He left and never returned to Daufuskie Island, leaving her with a broken heart. Haig Point residents and visitors have claimed they felt the friendly presence of Maggie.

According to an article about the lighthouse on Travel + Leisure, the ghost is friendly, though. Or maybe harmless is a better word. She’s never done more than turn lights on and off or make an unset alarm clock ring.

To Book a Discovery Experience

You have to fill out a form that you’ll find on the Strachan Mansion & Historic Lighthouse page. Click the Discovery Experience button (upper right corner) or the link.

This isn’t the sort of thing you book on a whim. You’ll want to plan at least 30 days in advance, if not more.

Per a Southern Living article, prices for the lighthouse run $300/night per person (based on four people) or $425/night per person based on two people. Strachan Mansion rates start from $250/night per person for double occupancy.

  1. Far too expensive for me, but if I could afford it, I would stay a few nights.

Ditto. Dream jaunt. But I love they’re open about their ghosts. (Sorry I’m just now catching up on replies. I haven’t been getting notices about comments!)
