In what is probably no news to you horror lovers, one survey reported that 26% of people looking to buy a home responded that they would be open to purchasing a haunted home, and 36% said that they might consider a haunted home purchase.

However, you don’t have to live in a haunted house to turn your home into a local haunt.

Whether you’re looking to host a spooky event for your family or scare the lights out of the other children in your area who come asking for candy, here are some tips and tricks on turning your cabin into one of the most faux-haunted houses this scary season.

Why turn a cabin into a haunting ground?

Cabins are a great way to invest in property that appreciates over time as well as earn rental income from guests looking to stay in the space you’ve personalized yourself.

If you’re looking to make a little extra cash around Halloween, you can turn your cabin into a spooky haunted house for people to visit, or you can spend a weekend alone with your family for a haunted getaway.

Not only will it be a great way to attract visitors to your cabin, it’s a way to create lasting, festive memories for your whole family to enjoy as well as integrate yourself into the local neighborhood where you live.

Start spook-ifying from the outside in

As your family and welcomed guests will experience the outside of your cabin first, it’s wise to start decorating from the outside in.

You can start by creating an innovative solid-state controller that can manipulate lights, fog, animatronics, and sound for a full-on, Halloween production. This will allow you to control a choreographed show and various effects that will have the biggest impact on your guests.

Then, you can add all of the traditional decorations such as tombstones, flying ghosts and other entities that complete the theme and design of your specific haunted house.

Haunting the interior of a home

Once the outside of your home is spooky enough for your tastes, it’s time to welcome the spirits inside.

If you’ve got a garage, start there, as it’s a natural way to lure guests inside into their fate. Raise your garage door about half of the way up and hang bed sheets down the middle to divide the space. Create a maze with cardboard or cheap wood and fill it with spider webs and other tricks that people must crawl through to get to the main attraction.

You can turn your kitchen into an operating room and use the natural decorations and machinery such as a refrigerator and fake knives to enhance the space.

Dry ice is a great way to add a spooky effect to any room, and you can use the same type of solid-state controller that you used for your yard to control lights, fog, sounds and even actions such as jump-out scares.

Use your natural space

The easiest way to transform your cabin or home into a haunted house is to take advantage of the natural space and design of your home.

If you’ve got a beautiful wood theme inside and out, incorporate that into the theme. Use furniture that’s already in place to enhance the theme, such as a spooky light setup in the bathroom mirror and haunting effects in the closets.

Regardless of how you choose to spook-ify your home this scaring season, ensure that you get everybody involved in the festivities to make for lasting memories that will keep people coming back for more.
