I Still See You movie poster

I Still See You is based on the young adult supernatural mystery novel Break My Heart 1000 Times by Daniel Waters. IMDB adds to the genres somewhat by categorizing I Still See You the movie as a fantasy, horror, sci-fi, thriller. But even at its root, the movie is a young adult supernatural mystery. And, even with a few kinks, it’s worth watching.

I’ll tell you why, but first let’s take a look at the plot, trailer, cast and crew.

Thoughts

In a world where the dead walk among the living, nothing is at it seems.

I had never heard of I Still See You before the other night. I couldn’t sleep so I was checking out what kind of movies Amazon had when I spotted it. It sounded interesting so I decided to give it a shot.

I was immediately pleasantly surprised. The acting was great, the cinematography and visual effects were well done, and overall it was a fresh and interesting spin on a ghost story. It even had some surprising twists.

The idea of this big Event causing “echoes” of those who were left behind to remain and become Remnants, or “Rems,” was really different. Especially because everyone could see the ghosts and knew they were going to appear at certain times every day. (Well, sort of. There was a bit of a twist with this too. But no spoilers here, so no worries.)

It was also interesting that just like ghosts we’re chasing these days, the Rems baffled the scientists in the movie.

Why were some playing out certain moments of their lives, while others played out their deaths? And when they played out certain moments of their lives, why did they pick those moments? Most of which were pretty innocuous, like reading the morning paper, shoveling snow, or walking across the street.

The only thing it seemed certain they couldn’t do was touch living humans or communicate with them –until our heroine, Roni, had a Rem who seemed to be trying to tell her something and possibly even wanting to harm her.

There were a couple of hiccups with the storyline though. I didn’t understand how ghosts –like the one who Roni thought wanted to hurt her– could appear in their loop somewhere else. In Roni’s case, the Rem actually died in a motel bathroom,  but all of a sudden he starts appearing in hers every morning at 6:30 a.m.

I also didn’t understand why it seemed to bring back ghosts of those who hadn’t died the day of the Event. In Roni’s town it was mostly the ghosts of those who had died that day, but when she and Kirk journeyed to Ground Zero where the Event happened, it was a literal ghost town of ghosts from every decade and century in Chicago’s history.

With those minor conundrums aside, I found I Still See You one of the best ghost stories I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe because it had little mystery to it, but it also had a lot of novelty. It wasn’t the same humdrum hauntings. It was a well-paced haunting with heart.

I Still See You Part 2?

I Still See You was released in 2018. Like I said, I just happened to trip across it on Amazon. I never heard any buzz about this movie back then. Which is sad, because it was actually decent.

However, the ending was done in a way where they could be a sequel. Will there be one?

No telling, and quite honestly I’m torn about that.

It was great as a stand-alone, but there is a bit of unfinished business. Sort of.

However, Happy Death Day pulled it off in Happy Death Day 2 U. I see how I Still See You could do the same and still be pretty good. Especially if all the same cast and crew were involved.

Rating

I’m not sure I Still See You is a solid three and a half skull movie, but it’s also better than just a three skull movie, so I’ll be generous and go ahead and give it that half a skull.

Three and a half skulls
