Crackle Plus is a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment company and one of the largest operators of streaming advertising-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) networks. They recently announced the U.S. premiere of a new original series, Insomnia, which will start streaming on Friday, January 1.
Let’s take a look at what this sci-fi series is all about and who’s in it, which, judging from the trailer, reminded me a little bit of an adult Hunger Games. Not quite. There are different stakes involved, but it has that same kill-or-be-killed-to-win-the-game kind of vibe.
Insomnia Storyline
Set in the streets of Moscow, Russia, the eight-part series chronicles the story of twenty strangers from around the globe who are forced to play the ultimate game of life and death. There can only be one winner and time is of the essence. Injected with a poison that will stop their heart if they fall asleep, contestants must kill or be killed for the antidote and a new life.
“Insomnia combines chilling suspense with nonstop action that our audience will love,” said Philippe Guelton, president of Crackle Plus. “We are thrilled to add this sci-fi series to Crackle’s growing slate of original programming.”
Insomnia Cast & Crew
Insomnia comes from Executive Producer and Director Slava N. Jakovleff (Siberia, The Birthright) and Executive Producer Michael Ohoven (Capote, Rica Famosa Latina, Push).
The series stars Shaun Sipos (The Vampire Diaries, Melrose Place), Dylan Everett (Supernatural, DeGrassi: The Next Generation), Pasha Lychnikoff (Shameless, Deadwood), and Alex Jay, a newcomer making her acting debut.

Check-In
In Insomnia, the prize, besides getting the antidote and living, is $10 million. Assuming you don’t already have that kind of bank, would you sign up for a cutthroat game where you might have to kill in order to win the grand prize?
Courtney Mroch is a globe-trotting restless spirit who’s both possessed by wanderlust and the spirit of adventure, and obsessed with true crime, horror, the paranormal, and weird days. Perhaps it has something to do with her genes? She is related to occult royalty, after all. Marie Laveau, the famous Voodoo practitioner of New Orleans, is one of her ancestors. (Yes, really! As explained here.) That could also explain her infatuation with skeletons.
Speaking of mystical, to learn how Courtney channeled her battle with cancer to conjure up this site, check out HJ’s Origin Story.
