How do you feel about a Beetlejuice sequel? Did it warrant a follow-up? Sadly, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the original, so I only vaguely remember how it ended. I’ll have to watch it again and see where they could possibly take a Beetlejuice 2. (If you have any thoughts, check-in and share them!)

It is important to note that the Beetlejuice 2 I’m talking about shouldn’t be confused with a short comedy of the same name that was released in 2014 written by Jake Fogelnest, directed by Ryan Perez, and starring Natasha Lyon.

So what do we know about the real sequel so far? Are the same people involved? Is there a release date? A teaser trailer?

Well, we don’t know a lot because at this point it’s still only listed as “announced.” But let’s take a look at the little that we do know.

Beetlejuice 2 Storyline

Here’s all that’s listed so far on IMDB:

This is a follow-up to the comedy Beetlejuice (1988), about a ghost who’s recruited to help haunt a house.

Beetlejuice 2 Cast

No cast has been announced yet.

Will Michael Keaton reprise his role as the title character? (Well, technically his name was spelled “Betelgeuse.”)

Will Winona Ryder return as Lydia?

What about Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin? Will they still be haunting the house?

Or will they have a whole new house and a whole new crew?

Back in 2016, after a Wynona Ryder interview with Seth Myers, rumors flew that Robert Downey Jr. might star as Beetlejuice in a remake. A remake is a whole different ballgame than a sequel, however. While it’s surprising no one has tackled that yet, it’s also not because it would have giant shoes to fill.

Beetlejuice 2 Writers, Producers and Director

IMDB lists Tim Burton not only as the director for the sequel (he also directed Beetlejuice), but also as an executive producer. Other producers include Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg.

Writers are listed as Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg, Michael McDowell, Mike Vukadinovich, and Larry Wilson.

Danny Elfman is listed as back on board to do the music.

Trailer

There is no trailer yet.

Release Date

That’s a giant question mark.

There was some speculation a few years ago that maybe in 2018 or 2019 the sequel might come out to celebrate the movie’s 30th anniversary. Sort of how like Ghostbusters: Afterlife was scheduled to do this year. (Until coronavirus derailed those plans.)

According to IBTimes, Beetlejuice 2, with a not very alluring title of “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiin” (what is he, Elvis?) was greenlit shortly after the 1988 movie was released.

Whenever Burton is asked about it, he doesn’t inspire faith that this project will ever come to fruition. Even Warner Bros has confirmed that Beetlejuice 2 is not in active development.

So…it looks like Beetlejuice 2 won’t be happening any time soon.

  1. The original Beetlejuice was SO FUN that I don’t think either a remake or a sequel could stand up to it.

I wonder if they know that and this one of those rare times Hollywood has just decided to leave well enough alone?

  3. Beetlejuice 2 is meant to be a 25+ years later sequel, with an adult Lydia…
If Tim Burton is involved Michael Keaton is also involved, and if they are both involved Winona Ryder also is !
Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin ? Unlikely if you consider ghost doesn’t age…
Late May, hollywood insider Daniel Richtman said Michael Keaton is in talk to reprise his role, suggesting the project still progress, we may even get it sooner than we expect, if Warner Bros doesn’t succeed before 2023 the rights go back to the heirs of Michael McDowell…
