Old South Pittsburgh Hospital will always hold a special spooky place in my heart. It’s where I lost my ghost hunting virginity. That’s why an article on the Haunted Librarian’s site last year caught my eye: Old South Pittsburg Hospital Shut Down.

Say what? I had investigated there in 2010. Since then it had exploded into one of the most active haunted places in Tennessee. Not just in terms of paranormal activity –although I certainly wasn’t disappointed when I went there, and I know others I’ve talked to since haven’t been after their investigations either.

Rather, the people who ran it were great about hosting events and being super accommodating to paranormal investigators.

So I was sort of shocked it had been shut down. Sort of. I was more shocked it took that long for anyone to complain to authorities about the mold and other hazards inside the creepy abandoned hospital.

In the Old South Pittsburgh Hospital basement. Debris like this would make navigating in the dark treacherous.
Growth from the inside out.

When I was there I had wished I’d had a mask or something for several of the areas we explored. Especially the basement. Surely there had to be asbestos in addition to all the dust and mold I spotted.

But it had to be safe, right? They wouldn’t let people in if it wasn’t, would they?

They did.

I ended up lasting until only 3 a.m. before heat and exhaustion had me copycatting my friend and calling the nearby Comfort Inn to make a reservation. I was desperate for a shower by then. (The building had no A/C and it was a typical hot and humid Tennessee August night when we were there. a.k.a. #Miserable.)

I also knew all that dust was not going to do my asthma any favors –and I was a little worried about the dark mold I’d seen. Hopefully if it was black mold, just a short exposure wouldn’t be too detrimental.

Besides, I’d done what I’d come to do: meet some para friends I’d up until that point had only known online, and see what an actual paranormal investigation was all about.

Like I said, Old South Pittsburgh Hospital did not disappoint. I had several experiences throughout the night, including a shadow person experience that to this day boggles my mind.

The Facts

Anyway, let’s get back to the point of this post. The other day I saw an ad for an upcoming Tennessee Wraith Chasers event…at the Haunted Old South Pittsburgh Hospital.

That’s what had me wondering, “Is it back open?”

So I did some digging and here’s what I found:

  1. It is in the process of reopening.
  2. The hospital now has a new owner, Ronnie D. He’s making the necessary changes to make it a safe place to investigate.
  3. The Tennessee Wraith Chasers do have an event scheduled there on March 23, 2019. For more information about that, click here: https://eventseeker.com/chattanooga/mar-23-2019/344443130-twc-returns-to-osphprc

New Social Media

The Old South Pittsburgh also has a new Facebook page. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/HauntedOldSouthPittsburgHospital/?rf=172350229462375

There was even a recent post answering FAQs. I’ve embedded it below. It will give you the full details on what you can expect when it does reopen if you’re curious about getting in there and doing some ghost hunting yourself.

  1. Happy to see the hospital has been resurrected for an new life. I refused to spend the night and secured my hotel at the Hampton Inn at the interstate. Hope they haven’t painted over all of the paranormal groups who signed the wall.

  2. Sounds like a road trip is in my future.

  3. Hello everyone , yes I purchased the building. And we are in the process of cleaning her up from basement to roof. All the pics you see in the above article have been addressed and are no longer a threat to Osphprc. We have stripped areas down the brick to get rid of any and all mold you see pictured above. We are trying to get her opened by summer if 2019 for all to enjoy. Check out our Facebook page for updates.

OMG!!! SO crazy you mentioned the wall! As I was looking through the pictures I was tickled I had taken photos of the walls and it inspired a post. (Which isn’t written yet, but it at least inspired the idea.) You’ve confirmed this would be a fun post and I need to write it! lol
