Do you ever watch a movie and think, “Why haven’t I heard more about this? Am I the only one who liked it? Did I miss something? Either the buzz when it first came out, or maybe it wasn’t as good as I thought it was?”

Thinking about it now, I think that’s sort of how I felt about the second Purge movie.

It’s definitely how I felt about The Cured, which had been in my Amazon Watchlist for…? There’s no telling who knows how long.

But it’s not actually on Amazon, or even a part of Amazon Prime.  It’s on Showtime, which I subscribe to through Prime.

Anyway, I watched The Cured the other day and, yes, I liked it. I’m always interested in ratings for whatever reason. This is one time I don’t agree with IMDB’s, which comes in at 5.5/10.

But apparently I also don’t agree with the Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes (46%). I’m more in line with the Tomatometer score (67%), or even with other Amazon watchers who rated it 3.9 out of 5 stars, which sounds fair to me.

Because while it’s not the best horror movie out there, it was a pretty good one.

Or was it? Is my judgment clouded? Was I just in a good mood the day I saw it?

Using Amazon Reviews

The Amazon reviews are, as usual, brutally honest. But they’re revealing…and sum up best how I feel about the movie.

So I’m going to do something a little different and use those to hit the highlights:

One other review to note, though, was from Eric reed, who labeled his review “Meh…,” yet really hit the nail on the head with the first sentences of his review:

I think the social issues between the cured and the survivors to be contrived and not very compelling. It’s a decent movie, but I think the story was just that.

I think “contrived” is a perfect word, because I can see people having reservations about reintegrating former zombies into society, but…I’m not sure they’d be as hostile as the people in the movie were about it.

Still, overall I enjoyed the the movie, slow parts and all. Not so much the ending, but then again nailing a horror movie ending is as challenging as sticking a landing with no wobbling in a gymnastics routine. They can’t all be Tens.

Rating

This is a zombie horror movie, but it’s not your typical fast-paced action one. There’s some action, after a lot of slow-paced drama, though.

There’s also some jump scares and blood, the majority of which comes in the form of flashback memories that the protagonist has.

But the fact it makes you think more than most movies –zombie, horror, or otherwise– is what I found most appealing.

I give it 3.75 out of 5 skulls. (But I don’t have an image for that, so I’m just using the 3.5 skulls one.)
