You Might Be The Killer is campy fun meets slasher movie –set in a summer camp.

A camp counselor suffering from blackouts finds himself surrounded by murder victims. He turns to his horror movie enthusiast friend for advice, and to contend with the idea he may be the killer.

Since my Shudder subscription didn’t let me down with Summer of 84, I decided to give another movie I’d never seen before a try before I re-watch some horror faves.

You Might Be The Killer caught my eye because I recognized Alyson Hannigan’s face on the poster. Some might be more familiar with her from How I Met Your Mother, or even American Pie, but she’ll always come first to mind as beloved Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to me.

Hannigan plays Chuck, BFF to Sam (played by Fran Kranz). Sam keeps calling her to give her play by plays of what’s happening at the summer camp. Which is that everyone is dying and it seems Sam might be the cause.

But why? He can’t remember a thing.

With Chuck’s help, Sam figures out it must have to do with a mysterious cursed mask. But can Sam destroy the mask and end the curse without killing himself too?

Rating

I really wanted to like this movie. It had all the makings for a fun one: A sort of Scream-like mystery merged with a Friday the 13th setting wrapped in a comedy.

But it was told in a non-linear fashion, which I’m not always a fan of. It was handled well in the movie, once I understood, “Aw crap. It’s going to be like that, is it?”

There are also a lot of horror movie references, which was fun. I’m certain I didn’t even catch them all.

The actors did their jobs well, too. My problem was I couldn’t really get into the storyline. I think it was the cursed mask thing. Didn’t do it for me.

Overall this one didn’t suck me in like I hoped it would. I’m waffling between two and half and three out of five skulls on this one. Basically, I thought it was just okay.

But others loved it so…it could just be one of those movies that I’m in the “dislike” minority.
